He talks candidly about the impact of online abuse. “How’s it right that people can just go on to social media and say what they want?” Hemmings asks. “What are people getting from racially abusing someone? Or from abusing someone after a game? When I was at Barnsley, I didn’t play particularly great. I used to open up my phone on a Saturday evening and I didn’t know how to deal with these people telling me I’m terrible.”

    He read the BBS then.

    Interesting article, thanks for sharing.

Just showing that there's pressure at all levels of the football pyramid.

Very sad. People often forget that footballers are people too.

There was an episode of Undr the Cosh where their guest suffered from something similar. I forget who it was now (someone from the 70s/80s iirc). They would buy the newspapers to see what rating they'd got, and if it wasn't a 6 or a 7, they'd have an anxiety attack.

    Edit: it was Mick Rathbone

I’ve never understood the downright awful criticism some players get on here at times. Footballers bleed like the rest of us.
A bit of constructive criticism can help, and most players will take it on board. But some of the stuff saps the confidence out of them. It certainly doesn’t help the player or the club. I just wish people would think on. when making such awful remarks.

Yes, there’s a world of difference between passing an opinion about how a player has played in a game/s, and/or not rating a player’s overall ability, but abuse is way OTT and racial abuse is simply not acceptable.

    Interesting read.

I remember watching a game while he was with us which we lost. As I was walking out I overheard a couple of people absolutely slaughtering him for having the temerity to come over and applaud the fans after the game which they thought he shouldn't after his performance (which from memory wasn't noticeably worse than others). Presumably they'd have also criticised him if he'd have gone straight down the tunnel after the game too. The level of abuse dished out sometimes is totally unjustified.

There certainly was another one who said it, as I recall it coming up twice. It could have been Carlisle.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being told on social media (or anywhere else for that matter) that you're not a very good player - as long as that's as far as it goes. After all it's the supporters that pay the wages, without them the players wouldn't have a job.

How many people would say that to their face though without their mates etc?

    Very few I suspect.

    Thanks for posting.

Let's hope some people on here can remember how abusive they've been towards our players in the past when we havent been doing well.

Let's also hope that those same people can look inside and recognise that their thoughtless comments can actually cause hurt to the targets of their vile and unwarranted "criticism".

Let's hope that they will stop......

.....and there goes another pink pig with wings flying across the sky.

some awful people in the world try to deflect their own misery onto someone else,it is everywhere, you can not afford to be sensitive in this life, worse people are the ones who try and play mind games and get sly digs in, Hemmings was O K, just not at the level we needed , back in the day a few mis-placed passes or do not take an easy chance your gonna get holey hell, remember abuse Potts got until he turned it around before he left
