https://apple.news/AIK64DEuwRtS0d1mmVenlIg Britain is offering to host the entire European football championships this year after ministers drew up plans to let fans back into football stadiums and outdoor music festivals by the end of May. Oliver Dowden, the culture secretary, has signalled to Uefa, European football’s governing body, that progress on vaccinations means the UK will have crowds back in stadiums before most of Europe. Wembley stadium is set to host the semifinals and then the final on July 11, but government sources said if they are asked to take on more games, which are due to be played around Europe, they would respond positively. The proposal has been made possible by Boris Johnson’s “road map to recovery”, which the prime minister will publish tomorrow. He will announce new targets for vaccinations, with all adults offered jabs by July 31, a month earlier than the deadline previously set. All vulnerable groups aged over 50 will have the chance to get their injections by the middle of April, two weeks earlier than previously planned. The NHS announced yesterday that two-thirds of those aged 65 to 69, a total of two million people, have been vaccinated, just a week after being sent invitations. About 460,000 people aged 64 will be called forward to receive their first dose from tomorrow. More than 17.2 million people have received their first dose and almost 600,000 have had their second. Johnson will publish a 60-page document outlining the earliest date at which each restriction will be lifted but make clear that ending lockdown will depend on vaccinations and mass testing controlling the virus. The document will detail the potential economic and social costs of restrictions, as well as the health implications. From March 8 all schools will return and people will be able to sit down outdoors to have a coffee or sit in a park with members of their household or one friend or relative from outside it. From the same day one designated friend or relative can visit people in care homes and hold their hand, though kisses and hugs will remain off limits. From March 29 people will be able to see family and friends in groups of up to six, or two whole families can meet outdoors in gardens or parks. A No 10 source said: “The two areas where people have been hurt are in education and the fact that no one has been able to have social contact with friends and family. That’s why schools and outdoor socialising come first.” Non-essential retail will follow in April, along with outdoor and takeaway services from pubs and restaurants. Inside drinking and dining is expected to follow in May if the virus remains under control. Ministers met on Thursday to discuss a dramatic increase in mass lateral flow testing, which they hope will make it easier to open up outdoor sporting events with crowds by late May.
It makes sense there’s almost no chance of catching it outside, you just need to manage the inside intersection in stands, etc. Probably no bars open and covid Marshall’s moving everyone away from inside to their seats ASAP.
Certainly seems to make sense it would be better to all take place in one country. Given the vaccine situation here plus the existing infrastructure to hold the tournament it must be a decent shout.
There is a Yorkshire company close to getting approved their five minute test who are working with the government on it. It's far quicker than the thirty minutes you currently have to wait for your result and apparently more accurate. If they use that test alongside people being able to prove they have had at least once jab I don't see why we can't have full stadiums for the European Championship. Summer weather, outdoor venues the risk would be low.
What of foreign support ? How do we go about making sure no one comes on with a strain that we can’t control ? These lot in govt can’t control the borders now despite all the **** they spouted during the Brexit debate so no chance of protecting us against all the variants that are circulating the world at the moment .
Talk about jumping the gun and perhaps recklessly as well. I think we should should wait and see how easing out of lockdown affects us internally before throwing the doors wide open to the wider world.
August! Tomorrow is the 4th of July, and we are going to open for business. It's going to be our best summer in years. If you're so concerned about the beaches, you two, you do whatever you have to to keep them safe, but with you or without you, those beaches will be open for this weekend.
Matt Hancock denied this in typical Matt Hancock style. He admitted he’s not heard anything regarding Britain planning to host the event, but in the same breath denied that was the case.
Don't think they would open it up to foreign fans, which would obviously lead to accusations of England having an unfair advantage. That'd be easily solved by getting a load of Scots and Welsh to support the other team. Would be a great summer though, just what the country needs. A bit like the 1948 Olympics.
Best post of the month so far, I do love a good Jaws link to anything. Best film ever made. The Tory cabinet do remind me of corrupt Amity Island town council. Boris does have a certain Mayor Larry Vaughan quality about him? I wonder if he owns a blazer with boat anchors on it? He certainly looks like something rhyming with anchor.
