Coming back to our screens shortly though some original cast members won't be around due to them leaving the mortal coil
The very best American comedy show for me. Will be interesting what they do with it. No Dad, no Eddie the dog and rumoured that Niles won’t be in it. I think, sometimes, it’s best to leave things as they were.
On that basis isn't it essentially a spin off? Does that then make it the first ever TV show to spin off from a spin off?
Daphne actress Jane Leeves also said she wouldn't leave the show she was currently in to join the reboot
It might be beyond my years but I don't think anything beats Cheers. Maybe it's because it's set in a pub/bar which is close to home for me, or because it has the best intro of all time, but I can watch it for hours and never tire of it. US Office runs it close but I think that's a different genre of US sitcom.
It had everything. Brilliant scripts, great acting from every member of the cast (except when the Moon family were in it) and a sense of theatricality about many scenes. When in Frasier’s living room, for example, that could easily have been scenes from a West End stage play. Just genius in many ways. No other American comedy comes close.
I really like Frasier but I'd say the first 8 or 9 series of the Simpsons are the greatest American comedy.
Different genre though. Cartoon characters are not acting are they? Sharp scripts, maybe, but not in the same class as Frasier
Was it filmed in front of a live audience? All opinions but Cheers (as mentioned) set the path for Frasier and gave that same feel of transporting you in to that bar no matter what episode you were watching. To say nothing comes close seems a bit OTT.
Agree. Also about the Moon family. That bit never remotely worked. Maybe it was more glaringly off kilter to us Brits.
Supposedly a “Manchester “ family and they all pitch up with a mixture of accents - ludicrous and the only thing they got wrong. Maybe American audiences didn’t notice, or care.
I’m not sure about the live audience bit. Maybe me saying nothing comes close was a bit OTT but comedy is a personal thing as we all know. Things like Father Ted left me cold. Others found if hilarious!
It's one of the few programmes that ever genuinely made me laugh out loud. Loved the characters, but for me, Niles was the unequalled gem.
