It's a well known fact in football. You always have to play to your strengths We've got some big lads in our team now, so when they feature, it makes sense to launch it. Must say since we acquired Carlton and Daryl we've looked a different team and having the option of Sibbick and Halme is literally like having two new signings. At this moment in time, I'm not bothered how we win. The important point is that we do. You have to admit, it's a lot less stressful being at the right end of the table instead of being either in or just around the drop zone. Whether we can break into the play offs or go up automatically remains to be seen. Right now, it's just great being a Reds fan. Well done Valerien and the boys. Hope you can keep up this terrific run.
Rowett is another classless manager. After today’s whining he’s surely up for the Jonnathan Woodgate Award for biggest classless tw@t in the Championship. And there’s a fair few contenders.
I really hate Millwall ...with a passion. However, having just read Rowetts comments I don't think he's having a go at our style of play. His observation is not wrong. I have, like many on here, seen every game this season and we are the most direct side I've seen. This is not a complaint but there's no denying it. We are route 1 = vertical football= unpleasant to play against. Repeat. This is not a complaint!
Thing is over the last few weeks we’ve played some excellent stuff. Then every now and again we go to a really long direct and frustrating way of playing. We are better when we mix it up. Last week against Stoke we were long in the first half then in the 2nd we started to knock it around. I thought we didn’t have the right balance today at all. It was an awful spectacle but a wins a win. I don’t disagree with Rowett at all based on today’s game. We aren’t like it every game. I do think because of the farmers field we are playing on though means IV just wants them to play percentages and not cause our own downfall in our own half by overplaying on a shît pitch.
Had a look at their forum. Cutting through the neanderthal drivel and language they seem to think they didn’t play very well and deserved to lose. Though they did have a problem being beaten by a side as bad as us. I agreed with their comments that Rowatt got the tactics all wrong second half though none seemed to notice the effect of our managers changes
I agree with you re the state of the pitch...and yes....possibly that could have some bearing in the way we play. Good point by you. Val wants to play vertical football. We're playing vertical football and winning and I'm obviously happy that we're winning. I do agree with you that we can mix it up. We always go direct from defence BUT in the final third we do, quite often, get more creative and we're also far more effective at getting great crosses into the box. I've made the point previously. It's just dead weird watching us play this way after never having seen us play like this before. Not even under Dave Bassett, who, before he joined us, was renowned for his version of vertical football. COYR.
Actually txt my mate at half time and said it was 50-50 between 2 sides playing similar tactics, the subs especially Halme made a massive difference plus our ability to keep going at a fantastic rate as they ran out of energy and ideas.....but the day I'm bothered by whoever drew the short straw of trying to make a club like Millwall acceptable to decent football people is the day I chuck mi season ticket in the Dearne and take up knitting.
Rowett tipping us for the play offs in this article. https://newsatden.co.uk/79269-millw...milarities-with-cambridge-united/?cmpredirect
He's wrong about the offside (I think). But everything else is pretty spot on and quite complementary. We are direct. But we don't sit back and hoof it up front aimlessly. We press like mad and when we do have the ball we try to get it forward as quickly as possible. And if we don't win the first ball, we will probably win the second. It's an unusual tactic but it's blummin brilliant to watch.
I think Big Val has opened a can of worms. Ive always seen us as a club that tries to get the ball down and pass and move. Maybe not exclusively , but certainly so for our most successful teams in my memory. We now have a manager that is a bit more direct and is successful in winning ugly and we don’t know quite what to make of it. It’s like we can watch a game and say we weren’t good to watch but happy we won, but if anyone else suggests we are a bit direct we’re mortally wounded
