I remember him well. One of those journeyman players who passed our way briefly. These were fairly grim times at Oakwell but Jim Iley brought John in as a big, strong centre forward but he ended up playing centre half for us.

Remembering this reminds me of Big Winnie who could play at the back or up front and be just as effective wherever. I think we may have another one now in Michal Helik. Goal scoring centre half!

John made his Barnsley debut September 1973 against Stockport County. We won 4-0 and John scored the fourth. Mick Butler also scored his first goal for that campaign in that match, too. John brought much needed experience to a talented, but very young, side firstly at centre forward and later at centre half.
    R.I.P. John.

Remember him knocking the ball down with his hand before smashing it into the nets in front of the Ponty couldn't believe the ref let it stand, we were all LOHO before text speak had ever been thought of.
Edit, actually I might be getting my M's mixed up, I think the above event was Brian Mahoney.

That team of 1973/74 was a young, skilful, talented team, which always attacked the opposition non stop. We were regularly punished for our naivety, but it was also exciting to watch. Unfortunately, football in the old Fourth Division was extremely brutal, with thugs all over a pitch, tackling from behind (for example) was legal. Our talented players received no protection whatsoever, therefore results suffered.

One of my Reds heroes. I remember him scoring against Chesterfield in the FA Cup on a snowy afternoon in 1973 when there was a floodlight ban. Another hero, Eric Winstanley was in the Chesterfield team. RIP John.
