We won six in a row at the start of Allan Clarke’s reign as player manager, in the Fourth Division. Everyone fully expected us to beat Torquay at home in the seventh game and about 12,000 turned up to see a new record being achieved. Unfortunately we lost 1-2
You're right PoR, we were riding high at the start of Clarkey's reign, although it was only 5 wins on the spin not 6
No it was five in a row , all at beginning of season , I can remember all the fuss about it when Danny Wilson equaled it at beginning of our promo season and he was gonna break it against QPR and we all know what happened . Think there may have been a cup game we won in the Allan Clarke one but as far as league games went it was deffo five .
We won 7 league games on the spin on the 2015/6 season, but that was the 3rd Tier. In the 50s, we won 10 league games on the spin when claiming the Div3 (N) in 54/55, again 3rd Tier. But we've never won more than 5 league games on the spin in the 2nd Tier.
My apologies - my memory getting slightly clouded there. It was six wins from the first seven, beating Huddersfield in the seventh match. I should have checked before posting
Yes it was five not six and that Chesterfield League Cup tie was a two-legged affair. The town was buzzing as Allan Clarke made his debut at home in the first leg, expecting him to mastermind an easy win. He looked good, certainly, and promised better things to come, but he couldn't stop us losing 1-2. A 0-0 draw in the second leg followed, and then those five league wins to put us top of the league 19 Aug 1978 Barnsley v Halifax Town W 4-2 League Division Four 23 Aug 1978 Crewe Alexandra v Barnsley W 0-2 League Division Four 26 Aug 1978 Bradford City v Barnsley W 1-2 League Division Four 02 Sep 1978 Barnsley v York City W 3-0 League Division Four 09 Sep 1978 Scunthorpe United v Barnsley W 0-1 League Division Four
Les Lawrence scored both for Torquay if I remember correctly and Allan Clarke penalty for us . Although very few matches stand out in my memory these days .
Just kidding MS. Love London and have missed it a lot over the past year. Gives us the best away trips of the season. After Edinburgh, it's my favourite city in the UK. I know Hebdon well. Reminds me of Cudworth - a coach company and a rough pub! I'm not fan of Norfolk but I think Norwich is another great City. Beverley, mmm....... lovely Racecourse!! Whatever you decide, all the best.
