His ability and success as a manager/ coach is without question, the evidence is there. I disliked him for his constant whinging. I remember a post-match interview on the Ill-fated ITV Digital after we had played them live on a Friday night. Can’t remember the score line but we won. He castigated some of our players and was like a cry- baby.
A true club legend - brilliant player, captain, coach, caretaker manager, Danny’s right hand man, leading scorer 1967/68 from centre half, scorer of a hat trick v Watford to win us the game from 2-0 down.
I don’t have a real dislike of him an would welcome him if he ever worked with Barnsley. My one dislike is that he is so biased, he will see every slight niggle by the opposition as a sending off offence and is very vocal about it.... but if one of his players two foots an opposition player in the neck, he doesn’t just not see it (like wenger), but will literally actively encourage the ref to send off the opponent for diving. He will then tantrum like a baby on the touch line until he gets his own way....
He was a tricky, but lightweight winger, but had a goal in him, if admittedly at 4th tier level. I always thought his robust footballing style as a manager was a reaction to being kicked up in the air as a player. I actually read his biography & seems a decent, but slightly dull individual a heart, but you could say that of most footballers.
I used to think he was an arsehole but the more I’ve seen of him over the years the more I think of him as a pantomime villain type. A lot of what he says after matches is done with a glint in his eye. I think deep down he’s a decent bloke. I admire blokes like him & Hodgson in that they love the game so much they can’t walk away. I know Mick McCarthy looked up to him a lot & said he was fantastic with him when he was a younger player.
Hes like marmite you love it or hate it if hes on your side brill if not he is Colin personally love him for the entertainment factor without people like him life would be grey and boring
My father in law's cousin runs a leisure complex in Cornwall where he takes all his teams to stop on their pre season tours of the South West. Won't have a word said against him, lovely bloke away from the touchline apparently. Find it hard to believe I'm afraid.
One of the best opposition managers I’ve come across in five years. In terms of how he was with folk behind the scenes. Him, Mick, Wilder and Clough to be honest.
I have always liked Warnock. I remember having a chat with him on the prom at Cleethorpes a couple of hours before he played for us against Grimsby Town. He is football man to the core. You don't get as many promotions as he has by being a bad manager. His brother John was my Coaching Assessor at Bramhall Lane when the FA had PCC holders upgrade to the UEFA Standard.
