I was in Blackpool that day and went to their game with Gillingham as a distraction. I can still remember the complete deflation when I heard our score.
Tbf they had the North side of the West stand as well as the Kop and quite a few were mingling in our midst. There were 28,000 there so I reckon 12,000 isn't that bad an estimate because 16,000 home fans was quite a bit above our average.
I was there, Terry Curran seemed unstoppable and it seemed like division three was going to be a tough year. Turned out we had signed Ronnie, God was walking amongst us. Suddenly division three wasn’t so difficult .
Remember it as a miserable and lonely day. We hardly had a kick and I went on my own because my mates were on their holidays. Return game at the sty was a better affair, special to wadsley bridge and players coach coming past as we were queueing
Took my mate to the Lincoln game. He’d just moved with his family from Leeds, he loved it - although he never came again Lasting memory of the West Ham game is Brooking crossing the ball for them to score and ending up in the wall bottom at the Ponty end. Old bloke that looked like Bob Paisley took a swipe at him
