Before local derbys there's always loads of back and forth bragging/gloating and banter. I'm unsure where one starts and the other ends, with reference to Wednesday as pigs and S6 a sty, Donny as Gypos and Pikies, and the like. I must be getting old as I find it all a bit puerile and it makes folk look daft when their pre-match 'brawnging' backfires if we lose. There's quite a few on here (and big Val) blaming the ref for Saturday's defeat. IMO that's not the case, we lost because it wasn't a good performance. It was not up to the standards we've come to expect from the current team. As for the bragging there's a great line in Shakespeare's King Lear which is sound advice "Have more than you show and speak less than you know".
There were quite a few people gifting us the points. That's happened a few times this season. Eventually that was going to backfire too.
Isn't the pre match 'banter' what makes the game what it is? Without the pre and post match bragging and tails between your legs etc it would be a very boring game to follow. Nobody hasnt gloated, celebrated, comiserated, cheered or been demoralised at football have they? If they haven't then I reckon they're following the wrong game.
I’ve got no issue with banter or gloating. Part of the game. The issue I have is when people start bairnin’ when we do lose, and blame it on everything possible apart from the performance. Take it on the chin.
It can also be a combination of these things, if we can’t accept ifs and buts then what’s the point in trying to analyse the games. Talking to a Wednesday fan less than an hour ago, and we agreed on pretty much everything. He was also at a loss why a foul was given on their keeper when we put the ball in the net. We both agreed Bannan had a great game for them and how the hell did he come off the pitch without his name being in the book. He also thought we should’ve had a penalty. We both agreed they had the better game plan and stuck to it and that’s what won them the game.
To be honest i,ve never bought into this local rivalry thing, if a yorkshire teams doing well, thats great by me, and grown men throwing nicknames around like pigs, blunts, swillsboro and B****nd rd, i find extremely infantile...
Sticks and stones and all that. What I find abhorrent is people being violent and people being attacked for simply supporting the other team.
Back in the day, unless you knew an opposing fan, there was nothing before or after the day of the game. It was all about the day. There may have been the odd punch up and obscenities shouted, but after you went home, that was that really. The internet affords people the opportunity to wind things up a week before and for days after a game. It allows fans to name call in a tit for tat way and to say things they would never say to someone’s face.
Don't get me wrong mate I have no problem with genuine banter as working for a Sheffield based company for 38 years I genuinely partook with those other employees from Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Huddersfield and Leeds. I've also played in hostile environments and been subject to racist abuse, albeit not the type that is prevalent here in UK. Believe me my friend I'm sure you'd love to be at one of my parties but don't hold your breath for a forthcoming invite.
