Grimsby would love a crowd like that nowadays.

It was depressing back then but as a 11-12 year old I didn't know any different really.

I can remember my Dad giving lads in our Sunday youth team a few quid so they could go to matches. Like the Liverpool match.

Yup, The successful Clark and Hunter years attracted bigger crowds. They more or less shrunk back to what they had been in the 70s.

Remember going in 84/85 season and we had Wimbledon at home.

Think it was just over 3000 that day.

My recollection of the 80s at Oakwell is that we were frequently very solid mid table and the excitement was often gone by the spring as a result. The play offs were not introduced until around 87. This is one reason why the fa cup used to be so popular - it could breathe new interest into the season.

When I first started going in the late 80's, 5-6000 was the norm, and anything over 8000 was considered bumper. Hence the complete chaos that ensued when well over 20000 turned up for the Stoke FA Cup replay. Crowds dipped back down to around 4000 for some games in 94-95 when half the ground was suddenly closed due to the Taylor Report. That was a weird season, although on the field we were absolutely superb for the most part. Even in 96-97 crowds mostly hovered around the 8000 mark until after Christmas if my memory serves me correctly.

I only found out the other day that Swindon (who we beat in the semi-final) were a non-league team. Imagine, a non-league team in the FA Cup semi-final nowadays....

Also, we played Chelsea at Home the day after the Final replay... no rest for them lads to enjoy the win lol. and we think the schedule this season is busy.....
