I was a bit thrown by this kit. First couple of minutes I thought England were looking a bit **** while San Marino had some skills. Took a few minutes for me to realise we're not playing in white
I’m really struggling with all football apart from Barnsley at the minute. Just can’t get into anything. This fixture is a prime example of how boring international football is.
Glad I wasn’t the only one. I thought it was Stones playing a sh*t ball out to Chilwell, just after the kick-off.
England playing San Marino is too ridiculous for words it's like Barnsley playing Dodworth Rovers a complete miss-match. San Marino should be playing the likes of Malta and the Faro Islands.
' The should have a pre-qualifying tournament where all the "minnow" nations like San Marino, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Scotland etc. all play each other to actually get into the qualifiers.
It's ridiculous that England - who I don't have any love for, but I recognise they're a decent (though not outstanding) team - have to play the worst team in the world, when their players seem to be involved for their club sides every other day, in the middle of a pandemic. It's so stupid. Why play the FA Cup/League Cup in a foreshortened season? Why force England to prove they are superior to the world's worst international side?
They could, if they chose, pick a squad of players from the lower leagues, youth teams, whatever, safe in the knowledge they'd still be very likely to win well (if not more likely, with a team full of lads bursting with pride at being picked). I've never understood why no nation has adopted this kind of policy against the likes of San Marino, Liechtenstein etc. I guess it's because they see so little of the players as a group that they consider it useful for team building, but they generally end up rotating the side anyway. It'd have been so much more interesting tonight if Styles and Woodrow had been playing for England though, I think they're genuinely missing a trick to get fans more engaged.
World cups and Euros are great and love watching them, not just England but all the teams involved. Beyond that international football is largely tedious. Endlessly poor qualifying groups where you can normally pick the top 2 before a ball is even kicked. Yes sometimes you will get a fight for automatic qualification but that usually just come down to the results between the 2 sides involved and they just then beat the rest of the minnows in the group. I appreciate every nation deserves to compete but it makes for a awful spectacle.
You tell players like Ollie Watkins, Calvert Lewin and Kelvin Philips last night that they played in a pointless fixture. You’d more than likely get told to stick it too. regardless of the opposition it’s a cap for your country. Id guess even Harry Kane and players like that would’ve been disappointed not to start, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. We seem to have a group of talented lads who all love being part of the England set up. Get behind them and wish them well.
