... Sunday trivia..... As an antidote to the French bashing going on in some of the Tabloids.... This: The French are seeking Unesco World Heritage status for the baguette. Now for most people that is, in the current World situation, not worth mentioning except the traditional bakers baguette is under threat. Anyone who has been to France knows you can go into any bakers in Paris, or any town or city and get a fresh baked baguette be it 7 am, lunch or late afternoon. Apparently mass produced factory stuff sold in supermarkets, like you get in the UK, Italy etc is taking over. They are OK but no comparison to the real thing!!
Wouldn’t it just mean we’d be buying a baton from the supermarket? In the same way I can still buy a pasty from Greggs, but they have to correct me if I ask for a Cornish Pasty.

True. But the point of my post was not really about the Unesco thing (which I agree is a bit pointless) but more that those half baked factory attempts at batons which are finished off either at home or in in supermarket 'bakeries' are a pale imitation of the real thing even in France if you are unfortunate enough to stay somwehere where they take 'short cuts'. One of the rare treats when we drive to the UK and back when visiting friends family (long time since we were able to do that), was stopping overnight in France somewhere in a small family run hotel or Logis in a provincial town or rural village and having a simple breakfast with batons freshly delivered from the local baker, french cheeses, ham. Speck, french unsalted butter etc. It is like comparing a frozen packet of 'Fish and Chips' from a well know brand. They may be OK but bear little resemblance to what you get from the local chippy.
