This new Northern Independence Party is gaining a lot of traction. Just for fun, if they got their way and the North gained independence, who would make the national football team? This is their proposed boundary, with the orange seats being maybes. I'll start with the Bury Baggio at left back.
Never heard of that. About 5 years ago in the process of writing a book I played around with different ways of trying to explain how - because Britain is an island - people have no concept of land borders. I wrote a short story of how the South declared war on the North. The battleground became the Midlands who rose up and demanded independence. In the story I imagined Boris Johnson as Prime Minister (although at the time I thought that might seem a bit ridiculous).
I've joined them and took part in their candidate selection for Hartlepool by-election tonight. There's a lot of enthusiasm in the party, and the bookies keep slashing the odds on them winning the seat. Gone from 30/1 to 16/1 since the candidate was voted on. Labour very worried.
yeah now the war apologists are back in charge of Labour I have zero interest in them. I hope NIP takes off we need real opposition. Who won? Thelma?
It's a real party, but the independence thing isn't something they're taking too seriously. It's about offering a genuine socialist platform that prioritises improving standards of living in the neglected North.
Perhaps I am reading too much into this (and ironically not reading up on it at all) but how will that work? What if you vote for them and they do take it seriously? They'd have to be clear about their policies wouldn't they?
It is a policy, absolutely. But none of them are actually expecting it to realistically happen, at least anytime soon. it's more about the imagery of bringing power back up North from London.
Back to your question, I suspect the north would have an unbeatable team. Certainly in terms of strength in depth.
