Nice to see the Union Jack flying above the Town Hall.

its hardly populist if loads of folk keep complaining about it!
Personally I'm not embarrassed if we fly the union flag , why not? we live in the UK and government offices have every right to fly the flag, other countries do.
Just don't get why folk are ashamed of their heritage, its not like all the other countries that do it have perfect histories.
I mean I would prefer the Yorkshire flag but ...

There's no issue as far as I see. It's just a deflection tactic from those in charge. LOOK AT THE FLAG. WORSHIP THE FLAG. FLAG FLAG FLAG. Then whilst everyone is arguing over it, they do what they like through the back door and continue to get away with it.

    That's the real issue.

In isolation I don't really have a problem with it. As a country we've never felt the need to do it before though so it's why it's being done now that begs the question. To my mind it's just another brick in the jingoistic wall being built by the Tories and bigots to justify Brexit and to deflect criticism from all manner of **** ups and chicanery. "you can't question our motives, just look how much we love the flag and the country". It reeks of Trumpism, Farage, the far right and, taken in conjunction with other things....it stinks.

And it's working, as evidenced in this thread(granted, it's a small sample size!).

If everyone just said "OK, fly it then" and carried on focusing on what was important, it would be fine and their obvious attempt at deflection would be a complete waste of time and money. But we are focusing on a complete non-issue and they must be laughing their cocks off at us even more than usual.

I don't think we are being distracted though. Just because I find the whole flag hugging thing pathetic doesn't mean I'm going to forget about what else they're up to.
They aren't hoodwinking me, you or many others but they are leading the easily led by the nose with a shiny red, white and blue rope.

So what do we do on the Queen's birthday; fly a bigger flag, fly two flags, get a longer pole and fly it higher? Baffoonery of the highest order from the Prince of baffoons.

Few things are more powerful than a flag. A flag is identity. People have fought and died over flags for centuries.

    Only a flag though.

    I agree with this view.
The flag being raised on the Town Hall has always symbolised a special date. Flying it everyday just undermines its significance.

Why do you think they've started doing it now though?
Maybe because they've forced Brexit through and no longer have that as a loss leader to tempt their base so they've now switched to rampant jingoism.

Tbh I don't look too far into the reason of why tbh, do I think it could be because of Brexit, absolutely, 100%. But for me i see it as our nations flag, nothing more nothing less.

It is our nation's flag. I'm proud of our nation. I'm also annoyed that unscrupulous people are exploiting both it and the unquestioning patriotism of a significant number of people for their own ends.
They're demeaning the flag not distinguishing it.

at a guess its in answer to when the EU tried to insist on their flag being flown, maybe they are proud of the vaccine roll out.
If some folk get pleasure from it why not? a lot of the senior wend followed that flag into battle don't forget.
If you are distracted from worthwhile arguments by a flag flying your easily distracted that's all I can say

The EU flag is on the town hall of many places I've been abroad.

I'd be happy to emulate them :p

Again..we're not distracted. Many people are disgusted by the naked exploitation of it. It's part of a bigger whole.

See, your going round in circles and tying yourself up in knots for the sake of an argument. One minute they shouldn't fly flags because it's tantamount to banning protests(wtf?), then they should fly them as they are really powerful important things that people have dies for. I don't get it...

Personally, I couldn't give a toss either way. I don't need a flag to represent my identity, just because I happened to be born on a certain bit of land on a rock flying through space. I'm me. As much as I want the country to do well because I live in it, my nationality doesn't define me. So I'm not concerned if they fly it or not. And at the same time, I've got way too many problems as it is without worrying about the decision a load of politicians have made to fly a flag outside their buildings.

As with everything in politics these days though, half of the people won't care if they fly it and half will think it's a joke that they want to fly them. Who is right?
