Nice to see the Union Jack flying above the Town Hall.

Agree with a lot of this but I think we should be able to express opposition to it without being told to live elsewhere.

Flying your national flag over municipal buildings is belligerent nationalism? Do you have any idea what blelligerent nationalism actually looks like? Google Germany 1890-1945.

Blind adherence to the rightness of my own nation? That sounds like me, you got me. The only blind adherence I've witnessed lately is everyone happy clapping at fundamental freedoms being taken from everyone.

As for you last point, where have I complained about migrants? I work with migrants every day. Theyre brilliant people. They love our flag too. In fact, I dare say they love our country and our history more than half of us. Perhaps because they know what it's like to live in tough and repressive nations.

I wonder how many were offended prior to the governments edict came into effect given its been flying from the town hall more often than not...

Secondly, why are people kicking off about the Tories current political failings using the flags as a distraction etc yet are quite openly bending over for them to absolutely smash the human rights act. Trample all over your freedom of choice for medical treatment and completely act in any disregard to any moral or ethic issues to push through vaccine passports so they feel safe in a pub.

I can see why some might find it a bit much. My point was perhaps people might appreciate our country a bit more if they were to move away.

Again, nobody has mentioned Nazi Germany, just as nobody referenced BNP fascist scum. You're responding to the thread and to me as though such words have been used. They haven't. Jingoism I referred to, and as stated, already, the actions of this government fit that description more than adequately.

As for the migrant reference, it was a comedic piece which I thought was obvious. You were telling people if they don't like it here, to go somewhere else. Were you not?

Union flags should be everywhere. The queen symbol on everything should not.

They’re taking the piss out of the flag and their supporters and people can’t even see it. Look at the Twitter post today for example, Truss completely surrounded by flags. They just keep going bigger and bigger and having a good laugh and there’s people cheering them on for it.

No, flying the national flag over municipal buildings is not belligerent nationalism and does not equate to the definition you provided. Do you have a problem with President Biden's US pin badge flag on his suit? I doubt you do. Well it's the same thing. Nobody gets offended by the EU and how it uses its flag. It's distinctly and anti British thing, which is fine. I just wish people didn't dress it up as something else. You're allowed to not like your country.

My point was that people should live somewhere else if they don't like it here. And I've no doubt that they'll end up coming back. You made the point yourself, why do so many people want to come here? Contrary to what many think, we're coveted as a country around the world.

Anyway, forget it. I appreciate your points and your opinions as always. I appreciate everyone has opinions I just get the feeling half the time that people dress their opinions up. I might be wrong, if I am, fair does. I also accept I can come across strong sometimes and probably can overuse sarcasm. That's my own failing I accept.

We're good buddy. We've not called each other names, or got abusive. It's just a sharing of opinions.

I'm a proud Barnsley man, and let's hope for a town centre awash with Barnsley flags on June 1st.

Maybe one of their dodgy friends has "sourced" millions of them from a geezer in Turkey and they are making sure they are all purchased at an extortionate mark up before they become useless when the Union splits?

It would be a little naive to think the Tories would randomly mandate this at the end of march with no ulterior motives behind it.

They've been in office for 16 months and there isn't a special occasion.

    So why now?

Myself and many others believe it's a classic distraction tactic.

Whatever the reason, this will be a calculated move. Of that I am sure.

I'm proud of it. My Dad, my Uncles, my Grandad fought for it too so don't throw that crap around. The way it's being used now is an insult to people like that because it's being used to manipulate not to inspire. They're hijacking it for cheap political ends and demeaning people who actually made sacrifices for what it stands for.

I always considered it a matter of national pride that we did not feel the need to fly the union flag or sing the national anthem all the time.
My assumption was that as an older secure democracy we had the self confidence not to need to fly the flag, unlike those silly Americans.
    It appears I was wrong.
This new policy seems designed to piss off the Welsh and Scots even more and increase the demand for independence.
How would you feel being told your national flag had to be flown below the UK flag? Its a red (white and blue) rag to the nationalists.
