As of February 18th we, England were fourth. Although this could be third, as there doesn't seem to be a number 1.

    https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/associations/association/eng/men/

Are England really the fourth (or third) best football team in the world? I don't think we're a bad side by any means, but I wouldn't place us win the top 5. We certainly didn't look like a fourth (or third) best team in the world last night.

Or am I being pessimistic and living up to my name?

Anyone any ideas on why there seems to be no number 1?

Meaningless. However high we're ranked we'll still screw up royally at any major tournament we happen to be in....

After the last 2 performances, England have dropped down the FIFA rankings to 29th.

How can we be number 4 when we haven't been consistently beating the teams below us as far as Columbia?

We are flat dull and have little of no intent. Barnsley do the press better.

Have england ever beaten a decent team in a tournament held overseas? I know they beat Belgium in Italia 90 but at the time they weren't exactly world beaters.

England seem to place great emphasis on friendly games or games against lowly ranked sides that they give a good hiding - but in reality it is only tournament football that counts and when we come up against top teams at that level we fall short every time, back in the day teams like Italy and Germany never did great in the lead up to the big tournaments but always played well when it counted, in the big tournaments, - I would say we are ok as a team but we haven't got the winning tournament mentality or the all round skill level to be world beaters that is the harsh reality.

I honestly don't know who's actually good at international level anymore. A lot of the usual superpowers seem subpar at the minute. I guess France, Belgium and Portugal all have good squads

    Let's be fair here.

Drawing against Germany, Portugal or Italy after 120 mins and losing on penalties is not a sign we don't have the skill.

Usually it's very very close. 2006, 2012, 2018, 2004 all exits after extra time.

We just need more composure and confidence.

The difference is teams like Germany Portugal and Italy go on to WIN the tournaments Sun we don't which to me means we haven't got the skill or the mentality

Those countries don't have a culture of crucifying their players.

    Thats the difference imo

What? - I don't think I was crucifying the players - I said we are ok as a team, if you look at my original post - realistic imo

    I didn't say you were.

I mean this country as a whole seems to enjoy sniping the team
