Love how these teams take FFP as an advantage to us ... as if having had the higher paid staff (and supposedly better players) wasn't even a thing.
I particularly liked the comment by the stoke fan when asked which specific players he would like from us.... All of them Lol
Thanks to Stoke for funding our promotion push. Whatever an oatcake is, their fans should allow themselves an extra one, to mark the generosity of their club.
Interesting to read those views. Some fairly sensible ones on there. I think there are numerous reasons for our success this season and a lot of those reasons stem from decisions made months (years ago). The board deserve huge credit for sticking to the plan, even when coming under criticism from the supporters, myself included in that. make no mistake about it Valerian is a brilliant manager. His instructions are simple and clear. I think this is often overlooked in football. Lots of managers make the game too complex. Footballers can only take so much on board. It appears to me that Val asks them to take little onboard. The instructions are simple, clear and effective. Press, win the second ball, then play. The players execute them game in, game out. If you look at the heat maps in games they’re ridiculous- the ball doesn’t really come near our goal that often. Logically that should result in few goals being conceded. We play a risk in doing this in that if the press is undone then the oppositions chances will be good ones, but on balance it works and Brad Collins is essential to the way we play. Then there is the fitness. The above system only works if the players are very very fit and motivated. Both boxes are ticked and for that huge credit goes to Val for motivating, the players for engaging and the recruitment strategy from years ago. Val uses substitutions very well to complement this. And then the talent. Quite a few disparaging comments on the Stoke and Cardiff forum about our players’ level of talent. They couldn’t be more wrong. We have some exceptional players that would stand out in most championship sides. Just because they weren’t sold for £5m a few years ago does not make them average players. Again, credit to the recruitment team. Brittain, Styles, Helik, Mowatt, Dike - all arguably in say the top 3 in their respective positions in the league. Anderson, Woodrow, Morris not far behind either. this season has been the perfect storm and is the result of a clear vision for the club. I have thought for about 15 games now we will get promoted and I still have that belief. We are incredibly consistent which I think will see us through the play offs. I don’t think this opportunity will come along for another 20 years so fingers crossed we can take it with both hands to change the club’s fortunes for the future.
Tbf they were called out on that one! It is amusing though( Norwich fans feel the same as us) how easy other clubs think it is to copy. Let's get a young continental.manager ( German preferably) fill the side with youngsters and jobs a good 'un! Mind you, if every team goes down this route what age will a footballers career end!!??
I feel a bit for Sollbauer in that respect. At 30,in our team,he must feel like a proper old man. Whereas in most other teams 30 is more like the average age
Great Post Wish I could have your belief of us making it. I'm so used to us falling short or knackering it up (akin to how we nearly blew it at Luton) but, like you say, we are very consistent since Val came in. I want to believe, I want us to make it, I just have this nagging doubt, we won't. It would be incredible if we did, but whatever happens, this has been one hell of a season. So lets not be all doom and gloom if we fall short. Congrats should be plentiful all around whatever happens these next few weeks
No we are not great to watch. I watch our games with some trepidation knowing that if we get found out we will struggle and consequently look poor. I watched Norwich demolish a poor Hudds side and I kept thinking if only we could play like that with the players we've got. Are their players better than ours or are they just coached differently?
Whatever the outcome this season, Val and the team should get on an open-top bus and tour round the town so the fans can gather (safely of course) and pay tribute. I'd be there.
Norwich have better, more experienced players who have had some Premier league experience under their belt. They've stuck with the same coach and that's the way he plays.
I think other teams have “found us out” but doing that is one thing and turning it into goals is another. When we are beaten by a ball over the top we’re so high up the pitch the player still has to run 30 yards and finish and a lot of Championship players aren’t good enough to do that. A lot of credit should go to the fitness staff as well. Between October and March we had very few players injured, after losing two in the warm-up early on. I think I read somewhere (the Chronicle?) that they have two days after games to recover, with the emphasis on diet and yoga rather than training. Whether we’re good enough to get in the playoffs and win them remains to be seen, but I hope we all remember that nobody saw this coming. We’ve had a brilliant season and we should all be proud of them wherever we finish.
I sat and watched the England games the other week. They were most definitely not good to watch. I didn't get to half time in the Albania game before I had to go do something else. Give me Valeriens Barnsley any day.
keep the faith mate! The positive slant on Luton is that they would have undoubtedly equalised in years gone by! We are a different beast now and they didn’t really threaten us in those last 10
I think we are great to watch. I find it quite inspiring how they work together as a team and hunt the ball down in packs. It’s batshit crazy how we play and I struggle to see how you can’t enjoy it !
