Boris certainly went a long way along with Farage but it was the Tory Party in general and C imo the last twenty years is as close as the fundamentalists of both sides was ever gonna get to peace . Not ideal but at least all sides including U.K. were guided by the EU and the good Friday agreement . It was always gonna be a struggle for either side to return fully to the troubles when everything was as near to the same rules as could be . Now because of Brexit both sides have the excuse of railing against the other with lies of who’s ruling who and who had their best interests at heart. It’s a minority from both side but both have the agendas to drag the majority own to their levels . I don’t think the troubles will get to the levels of the past but enough to ruin a lot of lives and stop progress and then the investors in infrastructure , retail etc start to abandon , unemployment and atrocities start the recruiting for the paramilitaries etc . Don’t want to be vindictstive but if the paramilitaries have to assassinate anyone please let them start with the Tory Party grandees and leave the rest of us alone .
I would agree with you - never understand anyone who takes a weekend break to rip off Dublin when they could come to Cork (the true capital and the foodie capital of Ireland). Also as a city of only 125,000 it has all the facilities with what is still a small place feeling. Re your point on re-unification - Mates in NI reckon the moderate Protestant grouping (Lawyers, teachers, professionals, business owners etc) are heading to voting in favour of re-unification. The last 20 years has shown them what life can be like. Mates down here I don't think relish the prospect of an ROI with a disenfranchised Loyalist minority. Your idea of giving them right to homes/jobs/relocation in England might be the answer although I think that type would prefer to go to Glasgow (the blue half).
The problem with that is, the people were happy because they had what they wanted. The republicans were happy because they had a frictionless border with the South and they were part of the same Union (EU). The Unionists were happy because they’d got a promise they’d remain part of the U.K. Boris’ deal has separated the North from the U.K. in order to appease his mates (ironically in the Conservative and Unionist party). They’re all now powerless, the Unionists weren’t getting a lot of attention by attacking the Police and buses, so they took to attacking their natural enemy, I find it difficult to believe it’ll get loads better, but this was always going to happen. I didn’t post here in the pre Brexit agreement days, but wherever I saw this issue discussed then, the English Brexiteer attitude to the GFA was always... We shouldn’t limit our deal because some people in Ireland will want to fight about the outcome; they’ll find any excuse to fall out anyway. Whilst NI politicians are generally awful, this isn’t their fault, it’s all down to Boris’ complete disregard for actual issues and adherence to sloganeering.
i’d agree with that assessment about the state of play in NI but it doesn’t take much for old enmities to be re-ignited. I think you’re right about Glasgow as well, but they would have to apply to the independent Scottish Govt for that residency as it will no longer be part of ‘Britain ’
Maybe we can sort out a swap deal. All those in favour of Brexit (including any Irish who feel that way) go live on the Island of Ireland (further away from the EU), those in favour of the EU (including Irish Europhiles) can come and live on mainland Britain.
ha ha. That’s a terrible idea! We Irish are instinctively internationalist in outlook and Europhile, and you British........aren’t.
What would be sweet would be a reverse plantation - move them all back to Scotland and have them vote against an independent Scotland, now that would be a master stroke!
See also India after partition (and others). 70 years later and they are still in a permanent state of low-level conflict with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Not only do we have an historic tendency to exploit land and people for maximum profit, we also have a tendency to run away when things get difficult and leave a mess behind.
Britain’s (English) involvement on the isle of Ireland has been a catalogue of disasters. From the Anglo/Norman invasion and occupation 800 years ago, the Tudor conquest under Elizabeth 1, Cromwell’s carve up with the Act of Settlement, the introduction of lowland Scots (Protestants) to occupy land confiscated from Catholics to the modern day “Troubles”. The simple fact is that Ireland should be a one undivided nation independent from Britain.
It should but the Aristocrats made sure that would never happen by stripping the Irish of their lands and giving it to the lords and Protestant Scots .
Thanks for that, had a yearning for years to visit the Emerald Isle and what seemed naturally to be Dublin ( don’t think I’ve any Irish heritage) Will look to visit Cork when I eventually take the plunge.
The mess left behind was intentional so we could stir up the pot if things weren’t going our way after independence. Churchill saw to that
Get yourself over there while you have chance Tarntyke. Fantastic City. One (it’s a long story) of my Wedding rings is in the River Lee (it’s another long story). So if you find yourself doing a bit of swimming, and come across it......leave the bloody thing where it is!
I am an internationalist and definitely not a little Englander. Sadly though I think I'm in the minority.
There are a number of women who know that Boris is a despicable liar. The DUP and people of Northern Ireland know that Boris is a despicable liar. The Tory Party know that Boris is a despicable liar. Unfortunately, the UK voters know that Boris is a despicable liar, but even more unfortunately they don't care.
