But my point is that neither the East Stand or Ponty End sell out. Very very rarely. It's nothing about nostalgia for me. It's about logic. Would we buy the old brewery land and convert it into an extended car park if our existing one doesn't ever get full? Anyway I'm just off to buy a new 7 seater people carrier that me and r'lass can ride around in.
Never been a fan of the west stand to be honest. But it doesn’t hold any fond memories for me as it was already out dated when I started going to Oakwell regular and I think I only been in it about 5 times. Folk need to let go of the past
Or I could keep nagging 5 of my family to drive to coast with me to fill up the spare seats but none of them ever bother. Then it would seem I've wasted my money and should have saved a few grand and just bought a 3 door Fiesta instead. Ah well ...
I agree re capacity, and have posted similar. But just because we rarely sell out the current stands isn’t the whole picture. if you buy that 7 seater and it sets the Mrs’ pulse racing, you might fill all the seats sooner than you think
I know it's not the whole picture. I'm not daft (well a bit) but why spend 2-3 years budget on something we don't need?!? Ps i don't need a 7 seater to do that. I can achieve that on a Penny Farthing (bike not currency)
Burnley and Donny concourses feel like an open field compared to the back of the West, the corner where the food kiosk is cannot be more than 12ft wide. The guy doing the health and safety check must tie his labrador up somewhere.
point taken, I was just stating that imo there isnt that much difference in a new stadium vs an old one.
The advantage of East Lower is the vast concourse, not many have that much room. Some may say it’s wasted space etc, but I love my half- time walkabout finding old friends and having a natter. What isn’t good is that you have a flight of concrete steps to negotiate and then depending on where you sit further steps to climb. My dear old dad stopped going because of his failing mobility it was too much for him.
I agree we shouldn’t spend too much on a vanity project, but we have almost got to the point where we do need to spend ‘something’. the current stand is a H&S nightmare for the club, it’ll have maintenance costs far higher than other areas of the ground (per occupied seat), so it’s also a money pit. So sooner or later it’s gonna cost us half a million just to knock it down, at that point we’ve no stand and 1000 spectators (at a minimum) with nowhere to sit. We’re also short of a media suite. This isn’t just about putting up a fancy conservatory to impress the neighbours, it’s about replacing the roof and making the kids bedroom safe for them to sleep in. Now if, whilst we’ve got the builders in, we can add a fancy conservatory for minimal cost, and that might generate some extra income, surely that’s worth looking at.
Hopefully people don't visit The New den, Loftus Road or the away end of the Valley... I can't even comprehend what they'd make of those facilities and the lack of space. Or the temporary stand at Fulham, or the temporary stand at Gillingham.... etc
The West stsnd is inadequate in every way except sentimental reasons its embarrassing! If we are promoted it wouldn't be ready but it's the trigger to ger it done fir the future before its condemed alltogrher. There will be issues with height due to the few houses on Grove street but thats tge widest part behind the stand. Something similar to the John Street at Bramall lane would do, the concourse needs yo be underneath like the East but doesn't have to be as high. I think the reason the East is so high is due to a high pressure water main running through the car park.
A new media facility was built at the back of the West Stand early last season. As for lux levels for the lighting - we could always do something like Leeds have done - additional lighting from the back of the stand. You’ll also note at Selhurst Park - the stand opposite the camera stand has low-down floodlights to boost their lux levels too. It’s all achievable without massive structural changes, a new stand is not viable due to timescales involved. It’s how Wolves did it - get some kind of consolidation in Prem, then do it. There’s a lot to invest, for sure, but it’s doable. The McAlpine had to have quite a bit thrown at it too, and that’s a newer stadium in some respects - although not that much newer, as time goes quick.
Really winds me up the people saying cut corners, leave the shitty lower tier in place and stick a roof on. Build a small stand, were a small club and need to know our place etc. If John Dennis hadn't massively increased the size of the away end we'd have lost out millions in revenue over the years, lost out in millions of revenue and probably be stuck in Leagues one and two if we hadn't increased the capacity of the ponty end and east stand too. Stop being negative and limiting the club for absolutely no reason at all except a pathetic 'itll do' attitude. There is space to build a stand the size of the east. A stand the size of the east gives the benefit of future proofing capacity wise. it benefits from economies of scale. It give room for money making opportunities incorporated into the stand They could even do an MK Dons and not fit seats in the upper tier until they're needed if they wanted to saving on the up front cost. The benefit of a smaller stand? It costs a bit less up front. The drawbacks of a smaller stand. Massive wasted space behind the stand. Too small to actually do anything with but big enough to be a waste. Limited the capacity of the ground to a size that's already seen us turn fans away many times. Limited the opportunity to make money. Small town mentality results in small town club
