A classic. Never tire of listening to it or anything by DLG really. got drunk at a wedding present gig once, had an argument with my mate by the beech stall because I was adamant they hadn’t played Kennedy... Gedge tapped me on the shoulder and said “hey mate I’ve just played Kennedy” .... off I trotted suitably told!
Regarding tracing stuff backwards, it's funny how songs I thought were incredibly original and new in the 80s/90s, I've since heard other songs.bands that pre-dated them that they were extremely influenced by. I'd never heard Wire's Pink Flag album until recently - it's great if you've never heard it - but I can't listen to Feeling Called Love without hearing What's the Frequency, Kenneth by REM or Three Girl Rhumba without hearing Elastica.
When Wire reformed in the mid/late-80s, they hired a Wire tribute band (The Ex Lion Tamers) to open for them - playing their old material so they could concentrate on the new stuff! Last year, I went on a musical odyssey = 50 states, 50 parts of the UK and 50 countries. I selected at least 2 bands at random from each place and had a listen. Some were good, some were great, some were bloody awful. It doesn't matter what you like, but there are plenty of bands out there that are every bit as good, but you won't ever hear them as they don't play in English. I still listen now occasionally to Komety (Polish), Wohnout (Czech), Melt Banana (Japan) or Llwybr LLaethog (Welsh) - as well as a handful of German bands (Serum 114 or Die Toten Hosen). If you ever do this, don't ever listen to Uzbekistani rap! This year I'm working through the "top 100" or 200 records from each decade. Coming close to the end of the 60s now, and heard plenty of stuff I haven't before and you can see the influences in later music.
Last year's odyssey sounds like something that Bill Drummond would do, albeit in person travelling the world and turning up at random gigs each night. Great idea anyway. I saw Die Toten Hosen in Sheffield in 1994. Great live band
If only I had the cash to do that. Speaking of Bill Drummond, four KLF albums have now been re-released on streaming services this year - The White Room has been added in the last week or so.
I knew about Solid State Logik 1 that appeared on January 1st but wasn't aware of the other stuff. Today will now be powered by some stadium house anthems. Thanks!
Apart from New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Accelerate, Automatic for the People and Fables of the Reconstruction you mean?!
