When did it become the norm to kick the ball away to make sure the opposition can't take a free-kick? And throw the ball away to prevent a throw in? I know it's called 'managing the game' but 20 years ago, and maybe even 10 years ago referees would have booked players for doing it. Now it's become the norm and they know there's no risk - so it's embedded in the game. It drives me mad, I wish it'd become an area of focus for referees to stop it happening. And whilst I'm at it, when did allowing players to steal 10 yards from throw ins become the norm too?!
He only allowed one team to steal any yards today . One incident where ball went out inline with their 18 yard line and the took throw in just shy of halfway line not one of our players ent to ref. Three mins later we tried to steal two yards and they complained to ref and he made us take throw 1 yard further back than wher the ball went out . Similar pattern all game .
I agree 100%! The referees have got to do more about this, it ruins the flow of the game. The quick free kick has virtually disappeared from the game...
I thought the referee was poor today as usual he gave us nothing. That said we got what we deserved today.
Ironically today not long before their first goal the ref let Preston take a quick free kick about 20 yards away from the right place, and in the 2nd half when we tried to do it - Woodrow played a quick one down the right hand side from the right place - he pulled us back
Agree! It's been a massive frustration of mine for ages how teams slow the game down at free kicks. Standing in front of the ball, picking up the ball etc. etc. All it needs is a simple rule change - if you concede a foul it's your duty to retreat 10 yards, and you don't get to touch the ball after a foul has been conceded. Games would be so much quicker and better to watch if they implemented this. At the moment tactical fouls give the defending team a huge advantage - which shouldn't be the case. Baffles me all the agonising over VAR when there are much easier things to implement which would make the game better!
I know Val doesn’t want us to get involved with the refs and maintain higher standards but we do need to start making refs aware of what other teams are doing. Teams do it with us and more often then not refs usually then start acting on it. Sometimes you have to play the same games or only One side benefits from it.
It’s so frustrating, non of what you said is legal. It’s nothing it do with how the game has changed in the last 10 years in my opinion. The root cause of why all these things wind us up (Add VAR to this list) is not because of the rules, but because of the incompetence of the referees. I’ve said it before on here and I’ll say it again, the standard of refereeing in this county is the worst it’s ever been and it’s embarrassing!
Where was this thread when Carlton Morris nearly took the Rotherham keeper’s head off? We lost today because we were $hit
He didn’t though did he? Next week my lad will play a team who’s centre forward dives like a swan. Everyone’s embarrassed but the lad, his dad and the coach. It’s supposedly part of the game. They’re 15
You'll note I didn't mention yesterdays game at all in my post bud. Whilst these things did happen yesterday that certainly wasn't the reason we lost the game. I should've been clear that it's the fact these things happen multiple times in every game nowadays. And we often do the same now so I certainly wasn't excluding us. It spoils my enjoyment of the game, any game.
Creeping change, apparently insignificant things lead to a new norm. The refereeing governing body (the Referees Association?) have allowed it to happen.
Also refs do nothing about time wasting and I include our own team in that. I would change the rules so you cannot take as long as twenty second to take a goal kick.
