It doesn't occur to you that the local councillors are dealing with a vanishingly small budget because they have the impudence to be northern?

that works if UKIP hadn’t Had a decent turnout in 2017 or if the Brexit Party voted only consisted of ex tories when the vast majority are ex Labour. Labour are a shell offering nowt. The people of Hartlepool on the other hand deserve every shitty thing coming to them.

Well we'll have to disagree on semantics, but in my world, 1 in 5 is plenty.

Fair comment. I slightly disagree with you by looks of it. I do think if Labour have no real vision and/or they can't explain one to people they will continue to decline. Still early days for Starmer but I haven't seen anything in the public domain since he was elected leader that suggests to me he really wants to transform things. At the moment I'm no longer a nailed on Labour voter. I probably wouldn't vote for them in Hartlepool. There are millions of people who want change and aren't being engaged by any mainstream party. It's no wonder some people vote for clowns with unkempt hair.

Why ? They returned a Lab MP in 2017, and now you state Labour offer nothing so what should they do ? SDP ?

Again, shouting at folk & wishing them harm because they might make what you see as a 'wrong' choice. Crack on, you'll get them all back on side that way.

Especially as it’s nearer 1 in 4, and therefore significantly higher than the proportion of over 70’s voting Labour.

You need to create one for the people of Jersey and the potential power cut.

Oh well I'm sure folk knew this was going to happen, and that's why they voted for it. I'm sure it was written in very small handwriting on the Brexit bus. Only the true Brexiteers could see the detail, because they have special superpowers like seeing into the future and being able to drink a gallon of Wetherspoons 12 month out of date Carling.

I don't disagree with you on vision. The problem Starmer and anyone else in opposition has is he's facing a shapeshifting liar who will take anything popular for himself even if its as far removed from Tory mantra as can be possible. Not to mention say one thing, do something completely different, then lie and suggest he's doing what he said.

I've been unimpressed with Starmer too, but its got to a point of just downright decency. And on that basis Labour are the best option to get rid of DePfeffel. Probably akin to Biden in the US election.

But we're still years away from a GE, unless it suits DePfeffel or his successor.

I'm not so sure it's that simple.

Of the 'old' people I know, the ones who were lefties when young are still staunchly left (despite having worked hard and having comfortable retirements).

The ones that would now vote Tory generally started with 'more', and whilst they may have been floating voters, I wouldn't describe any of them as 'socialists'.

So back to the stats, my parents worked physically for a living, they never made 70. there's a lot to be said for the changing demographics as people get older.

Years ago I was party to some analysis of South Yorkshire's pensioners. We were told that the 'average' pensioner with a lower income would be female, as lots of the men had worked in steel, the mines, railways and wouldn't make it into old age.

When I think of those women from my childhood, they'd read the Mail on Sunday or NOTW whilst the hubby might have read the Mirror. They were always more small c conservative and enjoyed looking down on others, whereas the men would be union members, with some socialist values (albeit homophobia, racism etc were more 'normal' than they are now).

In short - I'm not so sure that lifelong Labour voters just start voting Tory when they retire, in fact I don't think it's more than a rarity.

    You prefer Bojo then?
As I said I hated Thatcher and still do but Johnson truly is the worst PM we've ever had.

No but Thatcher caused immense damage to our society and I would never want her back. Really couldn't see her supporting furlough either.

I can't argue with that to be fair.

It's a sad state of affairs when we're even contemplating resurrecting the iron bitch......

I’m sure she would have supported Furlough Helen - the economy would have collapsed but for Furlough in March 2020 and no prime minister would have wanted that on their watch. I very much doubt she would have let it run on so long mind…(!)

Thatcher did cause immense damage. But imagine if you gave DePfeffel 10 years. The problem with him is he is corrupt to the core. There is no ideology or cause or vision because its all about him and allowing him to be in a position to do as little as possible to gain as much as possible.

He's incredibly dangerous. As much as the tories pretend otherwise, he left a major mess of TfL finances and myriad legacy projects that cost the London taxpayer a small fortune. In his 8 years the only thing he seemed to do was reduce the size of the congestion zone for his tory donors in the West End of London. I can't imagine what state the UK will be when he finally gets shunted out of parliament.
