"Forest Green Rovers are the first club to call for a ban on gambling sponsorship in the English Game" I hope Barnsley FC join them. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57008733
It's a difficult one. Back in the day..... Spurs/Holsten, Forest/Skol, Rangers/McKewan, Liverpool/Carlsberg. Alcoholics still exist. I get the sentiment behind FGRs stance. I really do and the owner's other ideas, it's refreshing. I really don't see many more clubs following suit due to the mass of foreign ownership and the cash involved. Think it was Fulham/Huddy other year who's shirt sponsor you couldn't even read unless you were from eastern Asia.
I suspect the vast majority of FG fans support the decision. In fact I suspect it's precisely because of this type of thing, that Forest Green fans are Forest Green fans. Huge sweeping statement, but if I was a betting man (pun intended), I reckon the people most offended by it, aren't Forest Green fans.
My post was tongue in cheek btw. Obviously, there are huge amounts of tumbleweed in my house as yet again one of my jokes just rolls by.
Gambling is the lesser of the two evils. I enjoy the occasional flutter, but don’t agree with the industry wielding so much financial influence over sport. Snooker players look stupid with the logos on their suits. & they bollocked the Hurricane for not wearing a tie..
Why? you could have every betting organisation in the UK sponsoring the reds & it wouldn't effect me one jot, if it helps the club financially then great
I walked into a bookies a couple of years ago with a mate who's a gambler and was genuinely stunned at the number of schemes they had running to separate folk from their money. Unfortunately, like drugs, it can never be truly eradicated but every opportunity to deny these firms the opportunity to fleece the common man should be taken in my opinion. An industry that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to offer a civilised society. Well done Forest Green.
Whilst I totally agree about the evil (in my case pointlessness) of gambling. Just like drugs, all you achieve with prohibition is creating criminals where there were none before.
As I said Donny, it can never truly be eradicated. I'd do everything possible to starve it of oxygen though and I'd certainly hope never to see a Reds shirt with one of their logos soiling it.
Like I said, I appreciate the sentiment, but history teaches us that prohibition is futile. Gambling exists, and whilst it does, we should encourage the govt to levy a direct fund to help with the consequences. I can’t see a much more positive outcome personally. Whilst there, they should do the same with alcohol and reconsider their approach to drugs. If you can’t stop something happening; surely the next best option is to mitigate any adverse outcome.
