this would be... https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/20787/pop-up-town-centre-bar-irks-pub-landlords "not evil - it’s just not very well thought out, done by people with no grasp of the town centre economy.” The pop up was a brilliant idea, they must have some idea because they drew in much larger crowds than any of your bars have ever seen.
Isn’t the gist of the complaint... a startup company have worked out a way to trade successfully whilst we are still trying to work out how to, it’s unfair that these people have imaginations.
Every other week moaning about something, they should concentrate on bringing their own bars into the 21st century, they might attract the crowds then.
Maybe Soho, Annie Murrays, 00Bar and Hill16 should offer something different and innovative other than generic lagers and **** cocktails inside then - they've no unique selling point and are bitching when someone comes along and is successful doing something different
Wonder which way these bar owners vote? I've got a sneaky suspicion that because they live in the past and don't want change they may also hold a strange obsession with flags.
I find it hard to believe they wouldn’t allow seating under Victoria arcade but you can sit under a tipi
Superb initiative and good on them. I don't know the pubs/bars quoted in the Chronicle, but certain sub sectors of hospitality are so slow on innovation they get left behind. Maybe the pubs and bars that haven't been able to open should have been coming together to take over this space and secured the funding from a a lead brewer or food supplier as a sponsor? Or even a business that was seeing a surge in growth due to lockdown and wanted to put some of that profit back in to the community? It's often not as easy as that, but I'm sure you know what I mean. I often find that those people that complain about initiatives that bring people in to town are often more nervous that their own lack of standards will be shown up. Not for one second saying that's the case here, but if you've got a brilliant venue, with brilliant standards, and a brilliant team, you'll always do well ........... apart from when the government forces you to shut for 9 months out of 12.
This would be frustrating. That Victoria Arcade should have been flooded with tables and chairs outside to create that continental Le Tarn vibe! 'Moules Mariniere and a drop of Chardonnay Monsieur?' 'Moules? Mariniere? Which butcher does your growlers?'
I see there's an article in Chron, re. Traders in Victoria Arcade opposing plans for more pubs. I sincerely hope it doesn't become Wellington Street with a roof.
I'm more worried about the story in the Chronicle of some Barnsley fan being banned for 3 years for throwing a sausage roll at Southend. Should have been banned for life for wasting a good sausage roll (with apologies to any vegans/vegetarians on here)
There's what looks to be an absolute travesty of a bar opening called "Peaky's", themed around the popular (in 2015) TV show Peaky Blinders, serving the same generic crap everywhere sells. As if Barnsley needed another Carling griefhole.
As an aside, we had a very nice lunch with Kaht Minor at Dick Hudson's up on Bingley Moor on Wednesday. Nicely-served cod and chips, and Lady Kaht had a particularly good Beef and Porcini Bourgignon. Very cool when the sun nipped behind the clouds, but dry at least. And as good a pint of Doom Bar as I've tasted recently.
I know both of the people in that article incredibly well. I used to work for Paul at Treadles back in the 90s and I've known Klaitz through playing cricket for and against Barnsley CC. Lets not jump to conclusions here, which is a little unfair. The lads in question have gone through 12 months of hell and will be massively affected by the pandemic, I know loads have outside of the pub game as well but we are talking about this subject. Loko is correct maybe the pubs could have gone out and clubbed together for the space however, did they know it was available? Its never been used for that before. Did anyone approach them to suggest it? Did they try and were told no? Sometimes when you are in financial difficulty or against regs its really hard to think of out of the box solutions. Its easy for people on here to suggest them in hindsight. Paul has a valid point that the arcade wouldn't be a COVID issue. The roof is 3 stories high, its mental and unjust when you consider the Tipis. These are 2 good local lads who are trying to get their businesses back open, don't kick them while they are down imho.
