A friend of mine who contested a council seat was tied for the most votes after a number of recounts. He just lost it on a coin toss.

I’ve never known that. Pretty incredible that it was a tie when each party had over a 1000 votes.

Surprised there wasn’t a bigger turnout in the Hoyland & Rockingham seats as there seems to be a lot of criticism on facebook about the new Hermes warehouse.

Turnout pretty poor all over the area. Only one over 40% was Penistone.

Doesnt seem a very democratic way to decide - surely Rock Paper Scissors is more appropriate

My thoughts on the local councillors in the Hoyland area perfectly summed up by tossers being involved , that is what they call people who toss coins is it not ? You couldn"t make it up

See, even coins hate Tories. Wish more of the electorate had the sense shown by an inanimate object.

Yes, his time may well come. Labour has lost a lot of it's younger members & mine as well, but more down to financial constraints in my case at the start of the first lockdown. That said there seems to be no clear message from Labour. Still voted Labour / Green today.

I’m really worried about us losing our Labour councillors. They’ve done so much to keep the libraries and public swimming baths open, all the work on flood defences in Kirkstall and then stuff like not charging for green bin collections like a lot of Councils do. We also get lots of communications from them throughout the year about everything they do and invites to the surgeries. I imagine things will change quite drastically for the worse if they don’t get back in.

Poor turnout could be related to the apathy shown by the candidates? Other than labour who always send a leaflet out I haven't received anything from any other candidate for years. I wouldn't know they exist if it wasn't for the name on the ballot paper.

In fact at the past general election just for fun (I'm weird remember) I tried to find out ANYTHING about the conservative candidate and couldn't. I was genuinely not even sure if they existed. No photos of them were online, no quotes from them anywhere, type in their name and all I could find were Twitter posts from organisations saying they'd contacted him but got no reply and also questioning his existence.
I contacted the local conservative party and the representative there said she had never met him either. I asked why there was no flyer and she said that he hadn't sent them any. I asked for any background information about him and she said she didn't have any. She actually ended up saying that basically she was extremely pissed off that she was expected to campaign on behalf of him but the only thing she knew was his supposed name. She said nobody in the office had heard from him or seen him.

That anyone can witness the lies and abhorrent behaviour by the conservatives over the last couple of years and still vote for them absolutely makes me sick.
