If they clapped us I'd find it patronising. "Aww, Barnsley, the little club that could. They tried really hard. Have a clap."
Courtesy & respect cost nothing & we should give them a guard of honour , there will be plenty on here who remember us doing exactly the same to Arsenal when they won the premier league & even though they then went on to win the game we still gave them generous applause from the terraces at the final whistle , I thought that showed a touch of class from both our club & our fans , cannot understand the negative comments on the matter .
This ^^^ Sport is about winners and its in the spirit of sport to acknowledge the winners. This shows respect for the winner, the league and the sport in general. These values are why being a winner counts for something. Otherwise if there is no acknowledgement or respect for a winner of a competition it devalues the whole event and competition. Winning the championship isn't about one team, it's also about how other teams and competed and fought. I would hope that our officials and players have gritted teeth and clap with respect but feel a hurt of it not being us, an element of jealousy and desire for this to be us. It should sharpen our ambition, even if only for this game. I hope it doesn't become like Scottish prem where petulance and politics overtake the personal acknowledgement of the winners of the competition. Then we play the game, then we prove why the competition and league is important, we make a point that their win came through hard effort and that we also were competing and prove our own capabilities and for us to be winners in this game. Thats what sport is all about.
Clap em out. It's not the end of the world. Just a sign of congratulations. Then as the score goes. As in the Preston thread. Dunt matter. Dunt care. No yellow or red cards. The semi's and final are cup matches in effect. Its who can do it on the day. Form goes out of the window. There are too many variants. Pressure. Nerves. Bottle. Tactics to name a few. Come on yoooooo reddddddds. Do it for tarn.
Seems a few of our fans are a bit spiteful looking at some posts in this thread . Most teams have given the Champions a guard of honour on achieving top position since Championship began and beyond . I hope we acknowledge their achievement and not be a spiteful little club which I’m sure we will .
Im definitely not spiteful. They are deserving league winners and would get my warmest respect and congratulations AFTER the game.
That’s not how a guard of honour has worked in the time honoured tradition . If we don’t we’ll be seen as a spiteful club and I don’t want that levelling at us nor do I think it will be because we’ll do the honourable thing .
I would say yes. Sportsmanship and all that. We shake hands before the game so not sure why there’s an issue of this before a game. Then, once the whistle goes, get straight into them.
It seems to work ok when teams come out of the same tunnel, will the Barnsley players run over to the opposite corner to clap them onto the pitch. I'm not bothered either way to be honest.
I’d expect their players to show mutual respect, in recognition of our achievements this season. Manners cost nowt & our lads are professional enough to make their own decisions.
A favourite away game for me, despite never seeing us winning there. Train, cathedral, pub, match. Had a few nice days out in Norritch.
Remember we tried to sign Jeremy Goss, season after his European worldie goals? He wasn’t very nice about us, but that’s 25 years back. Curly tw@t.
I can see this being the case although a few minutes later they'll be pushing and shoving each other in the six yard box so what's the point.
I thought it was respectful from us today. Good to see. One moment that made me laugh from it was when the Norwich players who knew Morris were all high fiving him and then McLean also went to do so until he realised he didn’t know him and there was a slightly awkward moment as he moved his hand away. Made me chuckle a bit anyway.
