BJS just quit on his stool for me. Argument that his eye might be too bad to continue but the second it got tough and he needed to dig down he didn't fancy it anymore. Glorified sparring session for the first four rounds. Then a couple of good ones for Saunders. Then Canelo just laid it on him. The guy is just sheer class and pretty much untouchable.
Completely agree. He quit plain & simple. Other fighters with eye damage have at least given it a round or two to try & get a KO.
Another 30 seconds of Round 8 and it would have been game over anyway. He was gone and out of his depth. Canelo had to take a bit of time figuring him out with BJS being a southpaw but I don't think he got out of second gear
From what they said on radio it sounded like he sustained some nasty structural damage round his eye socket.
He's gone straight to hospital with suspected broken orbital. No doubting he might have been in pain or hurt, that's why I said there might be an argument the injury was bad enough to force the stoppage, but my gut feel is he wanted nothing more of that fight anyway.
Chris Maddix. He's terrible at scoring fights - almost like he does it on purpose. Carl Froch now saying that BJS could have won and it's a sad ending with four rounds to go. Canelo was cruising to a win.
You may well be right - Bunce said as he stepped back from that punch from Canelo that did the damage there was a look of total resignation on his face.
I’ve no doubt it hurt but it’s the fight of your life & he’s supposedly this ‘gypsy warrior’. Kell Brook had his orbital bone fractured in the first round against Golovkin & stayed in there until round 4. He then had the other done against Spence in round 7 & stayed in there until round 11. Dubois did more than half a fight with that same injury against Joyce before conceding in round 11. Saunders quit the first chance he got.
Another 30 seconds of Round 8 and he'd have been done. Was plodding around, legs were heavy, movement had gone, and his whole demeanor was that of someone who'd realised he was in too deep.
I thought exactly the same in the build up and face off saunders was saying "I am gypsy" "you have never fought anyone with a heart like me" for me he didn't show much heart like you say look at brooks performances against ggg and Spence that was heart.
I don't think too many people will be sympathetic towards Saunders for his broken eye socket as he's an horrible person. Our fighters keep wanting to fight Canelo even though they haven't a chance. A stoppage was always going to be the result.
I don't think you realize while watching it until you think about it afterwards Every punch Canelo throws is a power punch there's no feeler punches ,range punches etc he faints with his hands and feet, bobs, weaves, and then bam full power to the head or body. every punch is thrown with menace to debilitate his opponent from round one to the last round. you can hear the thud of everyone of his punches on tv while your watching it i cant remember that happening with any other boxer whatever there weight he's also got incredible hand speed though he didn't make use of that in this fight. looking at him height size etc to say he's the light heavy weight title holder also beggars belief.
I thought BJS was doing well, personally. Boxing well, lots of scoring punches, but not quite busy enough (for me) to have been ahead at the point the fight ended. But I saw the punch that did the damage and from then on, he didn't fire back and looked like he was desperate for the bell. And you could see him in the corner saying "I can't see." and I knew that was that. Clearly done some right damage there, to cheek/eye etc. No shame in his corner pulling him out, protecting their fighter. But not a good look for a bloke who was on camera berating Dubois a few months back for a similar thing, and a man who says he'd rather die than quit a fight. Canelo is such a hurtful puncher. Proper spite in almost every shot. He's a terrific fighter. But let's not forget, he was very fortunate against GGG and was easily beaten by Floyd. So yeah, probably the best at this sort of weight class right now, but not the killer he's often portrayed as. I've enjoyed watching BJS for years, and I'm sure he'll refer to being ahead when it was stopped and all that kind of nonsense. Which is arguable. I'd have had Canelo a couple up, just for the power shots he landed here and there. I don't expect Billy-Joe to be humbled by this loss. And that's why many find him unlikeable. He's a ****** outside the ring. But then, many boxers are. Glad I stayed up though. Was beautiful to see and hear a huge crowd watching big sport again.
Let's no forget he wasn't in his prime and only 22 when he fought floyd who was the best boxer of a generation. BJS looks abit silly now with him talking about his massive heart in the build up and having a go at dubious for quitting but you could tell all fight that canelos shots were hurting him. If he had gone back for one more round with his lead eye gone he could have ended up seriously hurt. We have seen canelo finish some fighters in style kolerov Khan... I think if saunders carrys on his best option could be a rematch against eubank jnr.
