My heart & my tummy say it’s our biggest game. My head says it’s not & so long as nothing changes in the way we operate, then we will be okay. We should be able to attract better players after Dikes exposure for example
genuinely mixed feelings on this. finishing 5th has exceeded all my expectations and it's been a phenomenal season. obviously now we're in it I want to win it, and the ££ should set us up for the next 10 years. however I've grown to seriously dislike the PL over the years. I won't enjoy watching us getting smashed week in week out. I won't enjoy blatant favouritism, I won't enjoy VAR, I won't enjoy the profoundly condescending punditry, and I won't enjoy watching players rolling around every 10 seconds. my biggest concern around us not getting promoted is the very real threat of our squad being dismantled...and I probably include Big Val in that. If we had assurances that our key players and the gaffer would still be with us next season in the Champ, I'd happily settle for that.
Prior to the 1990s the FA Cup was a very highly regarded trophy second only to the league championship. It has only been won by teams outside the top division 10 times in its 150-odd years history. I think that shows the magnitude of that acheivement.
I hate answering a question with a question. However, the magnitude of a game is best worked out with the question...How would you feel if we lost? It wouldn't be rational but I'd be crestfallen if we lost. I felt like that in 2000. My life circumstances have changed and I realise there are more important things and I wouldn't swap anything for the world. However, it isn't a swap this is happening and it's for me. I've waited 21 years for this (as has every other Barnsley fan). So I'd be gutted and yes it's our biggest game since 2000.
Like I say I understand your reasoning FR. Would we have signed Brittain, Helik, Morris and loaning DK? Probably not. But as for importance, we'll just have to agree to disagree then mate. Just imagine what we could do if we went up to the PL..... Sign DK, Sign ..., Sign .... Build a new West Stand, improve facilities, the list is endless.... and that's just if we come straight back down again
Massive games for the future of our club. I hope we get there. But I have reservations. Not playing Saturdays 3pm as the norm probably the biggest. I enjoy the away trips and being able to plan ahead well in advance. None of this, Saturday 12noon/5.20pm/8pm kick offs and sunday games. Monday nights. Aaaaaaaaargh
This is how I see it too. I'll still be gutted if we don't get through, as opportunities like this are rare as a Barnsley fan (regular since ~1980), but in the grand scheme of things it's less important than beating Brentford was.
It probably is our biggest game since Ipswich at Wembley. For me, that's something to be excited about, not feared. I don't believe we'll have the financial consequences of failure in the Play Offs which is facing the other three clubs. Even if we fail, it's my opinion the club's standing has been elevated, meaning we're a much more attractive prospect for potential new players and possibly Head Coaches.
I would tend to agree re importance of the outcome. But winning wasn't the only reason we stayed up. Wigan blew their last game. Else we would have still gone down. This time it's in our own hands. Bless Fulham.
Very true, but we still had to do our part. I've always had a soft spot for Fulham, they even gave us 6 points The first ever football match I went to was Sheffield Utd versus Fulham in the mid 70s (76?) when George Best, Bobby Moore and Rodney Marsh all played.
Tbf mate they didn't give em us. Those were probably our 2 best performances last season imo. But I take your point. Re the players they were coming to the end of their careers. But it must have been a great time to be a Fulham fan. Their quality still shone through.
I wouldn't be crestfallen personally mate. We've had a brilliant season and exceeded all expectations. We all wanted mid table obscurity didn't we? If we lose the playoffs I won't be dejected at all. Just like I wouldn't have been last season if we went down. However, the playoffs - with a chance to get to the PL are more important than a chance to stay in the Championship imho
