I don't think we can take credit for Toney and certainly not for Armstrong who we just didnt play to his strengths enough.
I disagree, we gave them valuable experience along their learning curve and Armstong scored vital goals for us. A Winner Rotherham for eg, Toney experienced a Wembley win with us and a brief appearance.
They gained experience by being on the team sheet (sometimes), yes, but I don't think we can claim we developed them, or certainly no more than if they'd played games for anyone else. The way we played (or didn't) Armstrong didn't help him at all. Always clearly talented, always keen to run behind the defence, but we rarely played him in a way that suited his core strengths.
I’m not saying we were instrumental in where they are now, but the experiences with us will have held them in good stead and can’t be dismissed as not helping with their development as a player and maturing adults. I think you particularly underestimate Armstrong’s tenure with us.
I rated Armstrong highly. He looked like a finisher, he looked like he could run in behind (Paytonesque) and I was disappointed in how we deployed him. A bit like when we played Bradshaw as a lone striker. I think its testament to him that he thrived and developed exponentially after his loan spell with us. 5 goals in just over 20 starts for us and another dozen or so as sub.
I would have loved Bradshaw in this team working under Val , I think he would have been perfect , a player who always worked his nuts off , closed down players naturally as part of his game , I think Val would have used him in the Chaplin or Freiser role & I think he would have repaid his manager with a healthy goal return
I’m chuckling with you. Will be ironic if one of the buggers now stops us from claiming our rightful place among the European elite.
Armstrong would absolutely flourish on the left of the 3 under Val. Armstrong - Dike - Morris As a front 3?
I think Armstrong was still getting to know his own game when he played for us, so it was difficult for us to play to his strengths. Particularly after Winnall left. He's been at Blackburn for a few years now, after a stint for Bolton in the Championship, and dropping down to league 1 to join them. It's taken a few years for him to get a role down the middle, after playing him on the wing for a while when he first joined. Maybe we should've played him wide in his spell with us. Still not sure he's the best finisher though, he's had about a million shots this season!
