Players are employees, can't see a reason why they couldn't. Be a bit odd though.

Isn't the furlough cap something like 2k per month? Not sure how it works for fixed term contracts, rather than full time employees either.

 

£2,500 per month to cover up to 80%. Employer still pays NI and pension contributions.

Thanks. I can't how they can get away with that for the players' salaries. Though I suppose it's better than the bugger all that the club are actually paying them at the moment.

I'm not sure there are huge amounts of checks done by HMRC on this. So if a company go through the portal and complete it as they should, I suspect they will be paid it. It may be because football clubs are more in the public eye that checks might be considered, especially given the shocking plight the club is in financially.

Furlough should be for companies that can't put their people to work. Close season is a period where players are employed, essentially have their holidays all at once (if under contract) but are still paid.

If Sheffield Wednesday can't afford to pay them, they go to the PFA. They renegotiate what they can afford or lose them, or they appoint administrators. Getting the taxpayer to pay for those left is really low.

I think I heard summat Tuther day. As wages have been paid throughout the season and most players contracts end, at the end of June. They wont allow clubs to furlough em.
As income is coming in all the time, those on contracts beyond then are to be paid by the clubs.
Non starter I believe.

Just Picked up on this from the Sheffield star dated yesterday. . On about wendy and others.

The last 18 months have been a nightmare for several clubs across the EFL as they battled with a lack of fans and huge drop in revenue in the midst of the global pandemic, with many having financial problems on the back of it.

Now, with the offseason now upon us, The Star understands that clubs across the pyramid have been given guidance from the league that – after many enquiries from various clubs – they’ve been in consultation with the Professional Footballers’ Association and HM Revenue & Customs regarding their ability to furlough playing staff.

 

I was thinking there would / should be sanctions from the EFL, if they cap the players' earnings without their agreement.

Sadly there are billionaires all over the place putting their staff on furlough when they could afford not to.

 

It would be interesting to hear how clubs furloughing people has varied from every other company out there.

And agree on the latter, particularly given so many small businesses have been unable to claim full amounts despite being hugely affected by the pandemic.

Eventually somethings got to happen with player wages. It’s all a house of cards waiting to fall down.

 

Thing I’m more concerned with is all these so called big clubs will start crying poverty etc and then if any bailout is given they’ll get the bulk of it whilst the prudent clubs get next to sweet fa then they’ll start the cycle all over again , paying players wages the prudent clubs won’t or can’t pay and gambling on going on the prem.
It’s a vicious cycle with them crying wolf all the time .
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another Leicester City type situation again on the back of a club crying poverty for bailouts .
