No problem as far as I’m concerned , imho he wasn’t worth anything like the stupid money being bandied about. With the amount of interest being shown in him from other clubs giving him more leverage on wages I don’t see the point in blowing a massive part of our budget on the guy.
We will say that we genuinely thought buy out clause was affordable but there’ll be some nuanced comments about the player that hint he was asking for an unreasonable wage package. It’s the Barnsley way, goes back way beyond the current guys.
That Orlando statement makes us look either skint, arrogant or idiotic. Why not say that we wanted him but couldn't agree personal terms, if that's the truth?
Didnt Warnock claim there to be a £17million buyout clause on Dike just after we played Boro? How accurate that is will never be known.
In most cases it's probably true. More so now than then, but still some credence to the modern day footballer in the £1 million plus bracket likely to be demanding the wages that Mowatt and Pinnock turned down, and that bring them straight in on more than Cauley Woodrow. That's what we're up against frustratingly.
Honest answer? Because they've got their own fans, sponsors, and bigwigs to keep happy. Makes sense for them to spin it this way, keep the peace, bring him back for a handful of games, and then sell him on to a bigger club than us as a success story.
My opinion, for what it’s worth, DD is too expensive for the championship and not good enough for the prem. Bullet dodged.
I just think the ckubshould have said we're taking him on loan hoping he can help us with our play off push rather than suggest we ever had any chance of signing him.
No problem with this, it means he was successful & we got to benefit from it. Of course his stock was going to rise if he was successful with us, & despite still having a lot to learn bigger clubs are always going to take note. Some premier league club, probably of Newcastle’s stature will pay £10+m for him. Hopefully we remain in touch with his agent as another loan deal could be possible, & will aid his development greatly. Otherwise he could become another Ashley Fletcher. He needs game time, & currently he isn’t quite good enough to play in the premier league week in week out. He will be, just not now.
He had some poor games but some highlight reel moments, and along with our successful run to the playoffs probably ended up with way more media attention on him than anybody was expecting. As a result maybe signing him became tricker and more complicated than if he'd have scored 4/5 goals, we'd have finished 10th, and he doesn't hit that thunderbolt of a strike against Birmingham. We'll not really know our version of events until Dane speaks to the media this week or we release our own statement.
I think you are making a lot of assumptions without any facts, the CEO had microphones shoved under his nose & he answered the questions he was asked, I for one do not believe there was any attempt at deception by the club & there can be a thousand & one reasons why deals do not in the end materialise but there is no reason for any explanations , he was great while he was here & I wish him luck with his future career.
I really hope (and expect we will) put out a respectful statement that explains the situation, thanks Dike for his time and wishes him well. I really don’t want to see another article like the one Isgrove got that basically insulted him and said we didn’t want him anyway.
Yeah, fair point. But I can't think of a prem striker that would be on less that £20k a week. Aside from youth players.
His current base contract is $130,000 pa. He may well be renegotiating his deal with Orlando or looking for a Premier league club but i’m pretty sure BFC could have paid him considerably more than his current contract pays I’m sure Daryl’s future will be bright but sadly not with us.
I do wish people wouldn't read too much into loan deals and contract negotiations we have no clue about.
By same logic what club would be daft enough to agree a fee to sell someone who might do brilliantly well at said club and then you are selling someone for less value than they are worth.
