Give him a couple more years at championship level and he maybe be worth the money but definitely too raw to blow the budget on . Would expect us to have a few alternatives lined up.
If you was Orlando why would you put that? It waves a massive flag to their supporters and clubs etc that they want to sell him. Surely you would keep your counsel and publicly say option not taken up and be a reluctant seller in a bidding war to raise the stakes.
Id have loved us to sign him, but he's almost certainly going to get much better wages elsewhere, leaving us on an hiding to nothing.
The reason we haven't taken up the option to buy him i think is actually rather pretty simple we haven't got 1.5 million or whatever it may be to buy him according to the accounts we are in the red and its probably got a lot worse with the covid season. we would have to sell someone or borrow the money before we could even contemplate securing his transfer The Crynes and the people who don't own the club operate a low risk with possible high yield policy. They don't buy anyone without selling anyone They buy/throw multiple players/arrows from divisions below at a low same-ish price range even the act of moving them to a higher division increases there value in theory. this way any duds can be offset with the wins and even if more players end up as dubs than the wins its not going have a too much of a adverse effect on the finances. he will be classed as too big a risk to contemplate buying him as his fee will throw the numbers out. they may have even assessed him not to be a buy according to the data and his long term value to them players coming in from abroad often get off to a flying start as the data comes in and video is watched other teams can adjust to there play and counter it and they become less effective. they may believe that is what happened with Dike and its just not worth the risk .
Because your scenario makes out that Orlando wanted to let him go when they were adamant he was always staying with them? Would have been a PR disaster on their part to spin it any other way. They’ve flipped that around on us now.
I can totally understand the disappointment and agree with the bit about Dike maybe better off in the Champ for a couple more seasons. To be fair to Dane he has always said we will see where we are at the end of the season as a club, although he has talked about having first dibs on Dike on several occasions cue the disappointment. I think it's simply a case, as others have said, that he is holding out for better personal terms elsewhere (and likely at a Premiership club with all the attention he's been getting). Also if we had gone up I'm sure we'd have exercised our right to have first refusal on him and would be offering him a deal.
A few meltdowns and attacks on the club in this thread when the club haven’t made an official comment. Orlando obviously chose to go early with their announcement and Dane’s right to reply is tomorrow when he’ll no doubt speak to the media. As Doug O’Kane has reported, the attention on him because of our success and his success (and the fact he’s American - would a Croatian/Russian have had the same column inches?) has obviously sent his demands to the moon. It’s completely feasible that we thought doubling his Orlando wages would get the deal done, but he’s now looking at figures beyond our budget. Not a single BBS’er knew who Dike was when he signed him. Many then wrote him off after the Chelsea cameo. His stardom has grown greater than anyone expected.
Personally, I wish Daryl all the best. I think he's as good a loan player as I've seen play for Barnsley. He's been a joy to watch and played a huge part in getting us into the Play Offs. As a 20 year old in another country, his performances have been of a very high standard and his positives by far outweigh the perceived negatives, for me. I'm just sorry that we won't see him play for us again.
Haven't read through this thread but would have loved to see this guy in the flesh & sing out his name in pure admiration.
Can't argue with any of that, I thought he was brilliant. I thought the club identifying him and bringing him over was brilliant. I don't like us relying on loan players. However, I have no issue at all with a loan player like Matty James in the first half of the season and Dike in the second. I would have had no issue if either of those didn't work out. They were well identified in positions we needed strengthening where it was difficult to get a permanent signings. I have no issue if they're here to bolster the squad and we don't intend to, or can't, sign them permanently. Life isn't black and white. I've praised the club all season. I love the way we play. I have great admiration for the way the club have accommodated fans during really trying times. But I don't think the narrative of this particular deal is very good.
....so maybe Dane wasn't trying to put spin on it. May be he was telling the truth. Maybe he was looking to be honest with the fans. Maybe it was wages. Likely it was wages.
