Hecky played him on the left wing on the 1st game of the season away at Bristol in a 3-1 defeat. Which was baffling he then couldn't get in the midfield even though hecky banged on about experience then loaned the most experienced player he had out (120 championship games for.leeds) without giving him a real run in his favoured position.

Leeds let him go because they had signed Pablo hernandez and already had midfielders infront of him he was well down the pecking order, he got sent off in his 1st game here but nothing that I know of That his behaviour was bad off the field.

He just needed a manager to give him a chance in came stendel and mowatt and pinnock shone who both previously overlooked by hecky.

Sometimes it's not only the coaches, but opportunities at that time .
Look at Toby under big Val.

Strange on with Toby he never looked good under stendel didn't do much on loans to hibs and the one he's just been on come back and has been mostly solid. I'd more or less written him off but he was proving me wrong last season under val, hopefully it continues next season.

Fair enough, but on the flip side, I think some of our fans see our players through rose tinted glasses.

I think one good thing that lock down has given me is a better view of entire games, rather than just seeing them from crossbar height in the Ponty end I've watched pretty much every game of ours on my big tele and it's easier to be more objective, especially when I've not got 10000 other folk whipping me up into a frenzy!

I love our club, I really do and I love it when I see players give 100% for the badge; by and large this season every players done that which is the reason we've ended up 5th, but it doesn't mean I can't see players technical faults.

It was you who said the other day that you'd have Kenny Dougall instead of Romal Palmer, wasn't it?

And you are now describing the best performing central midfielder in the Championship in 20/21, as a 'mid-table' player 'at best'.

    Righto.

I"ve said all along that I think he will re sign for us & therefore I have narrowed it down to between two teams, Barnsley & Barnsley reserves then

I agree with you there but sometimes it is the coach, if the said player doesn't get a run of games in his favoured position, and the said player is overlooked for players of lesser ability in the end you sometime have to say that was the wrong decision the coach got it wrong.

Yeagh but sometimes square pegs in round holes, injuries suspensions, change of formations can make or break players, its not always the coaches fault.
Unless your Jon Parkin, he told me Steve Parkin hated him and always packed his bags when he was appointed at the club where he played.
    Cardiff city one of many.
    Top lad bless him.

But how much do you pander to a players ‘favoured position’.
The coach’s job is to pick a team that’ll work to beat the opposition, and if that means leaving a player on the bench, or asking them to play in a less favoured position, then that’s his call. His job also is to get them all putting the team before their own ‘preferences’

In a well run club, surely the aim is to buy players that fit together in a favoured lineup. Then hopefully the coach doesn’t end up with unhappy players.

I may well see our players through rose tinted glasses, I don't deny that. Neither do I claim that any of our players are perfect, as I've never seen a perfect Barnsley player. For me, there's no justification, though, for exaggerating a player's faults, whilst downplaying his strengths, either. These past couple of years has seen that happen on a regular basis, with Alex Mowatt & Cauley Woodrow in particular being subjected to it. If I believe the criticism is unjustified, then I'll stand up for those players, especially when they've served our club with distinction.

It's not a problem for me to admit my faults, I have so many of them. Perhaps I am guilty of over rating Barnsley players. But I prefer that to under rating them. :)

It wasn’t too long ago when everyone was clamouring for experience, well he’s that and more! He’s an highly influential player, and yes there might be better quality out there, but his influence and experience at this level is irreplaceable. Especially in this system.

One of mowatt s biggest attributes is his fitness he can run all day and in this team that’s key.
I hope he signs on again.

Toby had looked good in the couple of games at Hearts before his glandular fever.

What? How can anyone have this opinion?

81 shots this season and only 19 on target. 65% pass completion rate for a central midfielder.

As I said, he's ok at shooting and passing. Not good
