Best thing that ever happened to Mowatt was that loan spell. Wasn’t living the life, was always out boozing & wasn’t fit enough. He had lost his way after getting dropped by the club he came through at.

Not even starting every week for a bang average league one side like Oxford was the reality check he needed.

Came back hungry & ran himself into the ground even before pre-season & was the fittest player at the club.

He’s an example to any player of how they can turn it round. Sibbick another one. Couldn’t get a kick on loan in Belgium & came back hungry & earned himself a spot in a promotion chasing side.

I’ve no idea what the average ratio of shots to shots on target is for a central midfielder but I doubt that’s far off the mark given they’re shooting from distance. He got 8 goals & only one was a penalty. He can clearly shoot.

The pass completions completely flawed for a Barnsley player as the midfielders are told to drop the ball into dangerous areas rather than to pass to feet. They literally hoof it straight into channels behind full backs most of the time since Val came in.

His passing was excellent under Struber when we played a more possession based game.

There's the difference between watching the game and quoting stats. Not saying anyone doesn't watch/attend, or starting a bigger fan than you thing, just trying to say stats don't always tell the full story, context is important.

I'm just going on what I saw that season we had gardner and Williams passing sideways toothless in attack and Alex mowatt loaned out having not been given a chance in center midfield loaned out.
Also pinnock 4th choice center half behind jackson,McDonald and lindsay.

there’s a difference between a manager ‘playing someone out of position’ and the criminally negligent management we had at the end of that season.

I'd say all the way through that season, like I explained it wasn't just playing players out of position it was totally over looking them.

I have no faith either of the 2 coaches from that season would have got us out of league one the season after.

He was never given a chance in midfield in one of the unfittest barnsley sides for a while we had cavare who was blowing after one run up field, thiam in kids shorts knackerd after 5mins from the bench getting played as a lone striker at times *shudder* we sold Angus the then manager wanted experience we brought in matt Mills who looked like he had a trailer attached to his back and the turning ability of a double decker bus.

That season we also played for the 1st part 2 defensive minded midfielders centrally in williams and gardner both loans. Williams got recalled with injury in January and 2nd half mallen and a few others had a go. But it was frustrating no one took Alex to one side and gave him a chance.

I'm just glad we appointed stendel and the players who didn't feature for whatever reason pinnock mowatt... and the ones who got hammered by the fans potts, davies exelled even cavare got in the league one team of the season.

The majority of our starting 11 are mid to lower championship standard, no disgrace in that and it certainly isn't a criticism..... We've had a great season and the players have overachieved and rightly received all the plaudits, id be delighted but also surprised if we did the same next season with the same squad.

I'd like mowatt to re-sign definitely, along with further quality additions in the central midfield area.

Just to counter your point. I think Styles, Brittain, Andersen, Helik, Mowatt, Woodrow and Morris could quite easily play for sides at the upper echelons of the Championship.

Player gets voted into Championship Team Of The Season.

    Player is therefore not average.

    Carry on.

Always have, no idea why, or if it’s the same with all Clubs. And if he does stay (I doubt he will), he’ll go back to being brilliant again.

The thing that strikes me about threads like this is that it is very difficult to criticise popular players without getting patronising comments from other posters occasionally. Mowatt is clearly popular amongst most fans on here and possibly in the wider fan base. However, I agree with the overall comments by Red Vesp. There are aspects of Mowatt's game that are weak and they should be acknowledged even if some aspects are good.
He sets a good example to other players with his determination and commitment and has worked hard. He is therefore a good lad. But, moving forward, if the club want to progress then we need someone better than Mowatt in midfield. If, as some seem to be suggesting, Mowatt is the best player at the club then I for one think that shows also that the team isn't good enough and have probably over achieved this season.
Mowatt deserves his captaincy for the commitment and drive. He is though, for me, not consistent enough with passing (irregardless of hoof ball approach), not quick enough (not his fault but true) and disappointing with his shooting and free kicks (yes sometimes they have gone in but many have been dreadful). He is basically a 'decent' player but I think he's overrated and depending on the board's scouting, budget, intent and potential style of play next season he is definitely replaceable.
It's not a question of running anyone down as some seem to think, its a case of explaining one's view on a discussion forum.

Of course Mowatt has weaknesses. He's not David Silva. But those weaknesses still don't mean that he's just a 'decent championship player'. Those weaknesses mean that he's probably not good enough to play in the Premier League (IMO).

To say that we need better than someone who's just made the Championship Team Of The Season is bizarre. The spreadsheet had better get cracking if that's the case.

Just because a player plays for Barnsley doesn't mean he's brilliant.
Just because he has a couple of bad games doesn't mean he's crap.
Just because he wears a red shirt doesn't mean he loves/or should love the club beyond all else and all reason.
Just because he leaves the club doesn't make him a judas.
Just because he leaves doesn't mean he now becomes a rubbish player.
Is it possible to have a bit of balance and reason?!
mowatt is a good Championship player. That doesn't make him irreplaceable or Premier League quality. It's not heresy to point that out.

Nobody had said he's irreplaceable I don't think. And I don't think that he's Premier League quality either.

It's just factually incorrect to say he's just a decent championship footballer.
