    They haven't been over reliant on VAR either, every time the ball goes into the box. That was my main criticism of them during the World Cup in 2018.

    Thought he was a bit finicky at times. Seemed to blow up for the smallest offence on a couple of occasions when he could have played advantage. But overall he got a lot more right than he got wrong, which is all you can really ask for. Being a ref really is a thankless task. The interview with the guy who was reffing when Thierry Henry's handball knocked Ireland out of the World Cup is absolutely fascinating, and hugely revealing to the problems that refs face.

    bet players are confused though," hang on normally if I get a slight touch and go down its free kick", these refs waving play on, makes for better game

    Have to agree, not often I find myself applauding referee performances but they have been much better than I remember from past tournaments. Good balanced decisions, letting play go on where appropriate, not falling for players acting up.

    Compare the one for the England game today with the one from the play off second leg. One didn’t fall for any diving and theatrics, the other fell for everything.
