Just moved house so finally got a garage, which means I've cancelled my Nuffield gym membership and want to start on my home gym with an exercise bike. Problem is I'm a bit of a lazy fecker, so although I've wanted an exercise bike for ages there's a chance that I'll not use it as much as I think I will. Therefore, can anyone recommend one that I can get cheap so I can give it a whirl for a few months before I take the plunge on an expensive one? Happy to go second hand. Cheers.
Consider a cheap cross-trainer / exercise bike combo. Mrs bought ours and it really got me through my cardio rehab when the weather was crap. Never really liked cycling but the cross-fit was great. Think we paid about £130-150.
I have a spinning exercise bike I bought which is a bit heavy for the house pm me and I will send you a picture . Be ideal for the garage . Woñt be too expensive to try out first
Those Peloton and similar are great, and addictive, but pricey so you would need to use. if you already have a bike, consider a cheap, no frills turbo-trainer to attach to ........ only additional expense possibly a training tyre for the rear wheel.
Unfortuantely I don't already have a bike. Like the look of Peleton etc but so expensive so need to be properly into it.
Read something about the Peleton being sued in America about something (can’t remember what). In my experience if you struggle with motivation to go on it, you are less likely to go on a cheap one than a decent built one.
Zwift is similar to Peloton at a fraction of the cost. I can be pretty lazy too, but live cycling. Would imagine you'd enjoy being on the road much more than stuck in a garage, unlesd on Zwift/peloton. Would recommend renting a road bike for a few days and seeing how you find it. You'll be amazed how far you can get in pretty little time.
got my bike on a turbo trainer but cant use it as it knocks lumps out of my lower spine ( spondolylothesis ?) according to my physio its because i'm not using micro twitches to keep my balance like i would on the trails ???????
TBH, if you like cycling I’d go with the turbo trainer option and a normal bike (MTB or Road Bike) and then if you don’t like riding in the garage you can trot off whenever you want
Yes, they can be quite 'rigid' which leads to boredom. hard to do stand-up sprints to (nigh on impossible) so you tend not to change position much.
RDO is that turbo trainer one of those V shaped things you just clip the bike in and your away.If it is I have one and they are great, you just use the bike as if you were on the road and it doesn’t rain in the garage
Find a decent pub two miles away and walk to it and back (or taxi) , it won’t get you fit but it will trick your brain into thinking you are
Buy a proper bike and a turbo trainer. In fact I've got a turbo trainer I never use (got it for my daughter who then sold her bike) you can have free. That way when you get bored cycling in the gloomy confines of your garage, you can get out and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and countryside. You'll wonder why you ever thought it was a good idea to do an outdoor sport indoors.... On that subject, we played badminton last night in a sports hall with no air-con where half the hall was taken up by VERY noisy "spinners" complete with LOUD music and shouty girl. When we got there, they had wedged open the fire doors which we closed much to their annoyance. Badminton (an INDOOR sport) is impossible to play even with the slightest breeze - shuttlecocks drift all over the place if somebody coughs..... They weren't happy
