    Just watching France v Germany in Munich and as long as I can remember I’ve never been able to fathom how we got Munich from Munchen.
    I get that Paris in French is Paree etc but Munich from Munchen ?

    Munchen is German for Munich. Have I misunderstood your question Marlon?

    Think he means why do we say Munich rather than something that sounds more like Munchen?

    Just looked it up - seems that the English name comes from an older German variant. So it used to be Munichen, and that became München in German and Munich in English.

    Interesting!

    We really should call it Munchen.
    Don’t understand why we have to change it.

    Yes ,if Munchen is the German name then it’s Munchen not Munich , I can see how we differ a bit in language as I said above with Paris and Roma etc but to derive Munich from Munchen is way out

    I've never understood why we change anything. For example, what's wrong with saying España? It sounds much nicer than Spain.

    Not sure but I watched their fans turn on one of their supporters when he chimed up “ give us a B”

    It used to annoy me; I thought it was arrogant of us to change the name of foreign places.
    Then I realised everyone else did it. Still think it’s daft mind, just more chilled about it now.

    Hang on though; wouldn’t it be a start on us* learning other languages if we only learned place names the way the locals knew them?

    * Us as in everyone.
