Say hello to Whitney! She’s two years old and a Labrador x Golden Retriever. We got her on Tuesday for 10 weeks but she hasn’t settled very well yet. She doesn’t seem to know how to play, or else has no interest in it. She’s spent almost all the time when not at school in bed It’s the first time I’ve noticed any of the dogs seem sad about being moved somewhere new. Hopefully she’ll come around to us soon.
This is what happens to my daughters Lhasa when she comes out with her grandad and his dogs,my working cocker has trained her well
Thank you for posting the photo, JamDrop. I'm certain Whitney will soon come to appreciate the loving home you and your husband provide. Patience is the key and I believe the two of you have it in abundance. She's definitely a beauty.
my whippet Jake please dont by a whippet on the basis of needing little exercise, i walk miles with mine, these dogs deserve proper walks, incidently when i bought him i also bought his bro and gave him to my dad as they had just lost their dog, my dad is 80 and goes out five times a day with his.. keeps em both going, there was method in my madness so to speak
This clever girl became a life changer today! When I posted back in November that we’d be having Whitney for 10 weeks I had no idea she’d really be here 7 months! I was worried at first that she was on her bed a lot because she was sad but it turns out she’s just really chill and likes to lay down and relax when she’s not working. She is wonderfully well behaved and will make a perfect guide dog! I miss her already We do get a new dog on Monday though so not too long to wait.
You'll love the next one just as much. You are doing a wonderful job and are helping someone who will really need their guide doggy for keeps in the future. You may feel like you are only a stepping stone but if you weren't there then someone else might not get the doggy they deserve.
Thanks Badger! I’ve just been telling myself all day that there’s someone who’s currently excitedly posting pictures of Whitney somewhere saying ‘she’s arrived, here’s my new guide dog!’ The trainer was lovely too as she gave us a thank you card as she took her and inside she’d put a pack of photos that Guide Dogs had taken of Whitney during her training so those have been cheering me up.
We can’t really take the credit - although we did manage to not mess her training up whilst she was with us so there’s that I suppose She’s the first one to ‘pass’ that we’ve had as two were decided that they’d be better off as pets (one we only had for a week whilst her usual boarders were on holiday) and two were already qualified but needed short term fostering. I’m super proud of her, it was obvious that she’d make it, if she hadn’t I’d have had no idea what they were looking for.
I'm so impressed and in awe of the work you do with Guide Dogs, JamDrop. Please keep up the wonderful work and continue to post your photos.
Don’t downplay what you’ve done! It’s absolutely incredible and you two should be incredibly proud! I donate to guide dog charities each month and it’s nice to know it’s paying off
I’ll definitely introduce you to Thorne on Monday (I think he was named by Sainsbury’s in Thorne who did a fundraiser to name a puppy). He’s 3 years old and already full qualified but he’s going to have some retraining, I think to help train up a new trainer - if Will got the right end of the stick.
