While working on Friday Morning in Harehills I saw a massive rat and a seagull having a fight in the middle of the street over a box of Macdonald's chips that the rat had nicked out of a wheelie bin. This was in broad daylight in the middle of a housing estate. The rat was winning until the seagulls mates turned up and kicked his head in. Leeds really is a shithole when you look past the shiney bits.
Leave the centre and it's just like any other place, got its good bits, its bad bits and its hell on earth bits.
One early morning in Bramley (Leeds) I saw a cat and a fox sat on the pavement next to each other. When they saw me they split. I'm glad I broke up their scheming ways.
Saw a deer just sat grazing on the banking at the side of the M1 just after it splits from the M621 a few days ago. They seem to be all over now
Like everywhere, it has its parts that are very affluent, and parts that are incredibly rough. I always used to say that the nicer areas of Leeds are 5x nicer than the nicer parts of Barnsley, but the rougher areas are 5x times rougher as well.
Theres been a huge rise in deer numbers as we've not been consuming as much with restaurants closed or service reduced. It does mean venison is much cheaper than usual, if you like it of course.
I used to joke that Leeds would be a lot better if you demolished a mile-wide strip going Northeast from Ellend Road and skirting around the City Centre. It probably should be 2 miles wide.
Fairly good analogy. A lot of the villages around Barnsley & Old Town are lovely, but there are some mega affluent areas in Leeds, like Roundhay, Oakwood, Adel, Bramhope, Far Headingley, etc. Gipton, Halton Moor, Belle Isle, Harehills, Seacroft, etc are worse than anywhere I can think of in Barnsley.
I once saw a Hedgehog and a rat having a fight in the Beeston area of Leeds The hedgehog won on points
I lived in Seacroft for a while, and it's very comparable to how Kendray was when I was growing up. I lived in Cross Gates after, and that's quite similar to Wombwell. I had mates live in Oakwood and Roundhay and there's few places I can think of in Barnsley that are as nice. But then driving through Chapeltown is like driving through a Mad Max scene. I live in Sheffield now and it's the same here. Dore and Totley are stunningly beautiful, but Darnall and Pitsmoor make Cudworth (where I'm originally from) look like Saint Tropez.
The walk down into the city from Headingley is one of my favourite city walks. Has a great vibe, Leeds.
Yes, from mine I walk down Meanwood Ridge (which my flat overlooks), across Hyde Park & the Uni Campus into town. Just over a two mile walk, but a pleasant one.
