Incredible achievement by Mark Cavendish winning his 31st stage in the Tour de France.

To all intents and purposes his career seemed over. Couldn't get a team and not won a stage for five years after serious injury, major accidents and injuries, and depression.

You could see the delight of everyone including his rivals at such a sensational win against all the odds.

On any other day this should have been top of the news. It is a measure of the situation that it has took a truly historic England win to displace it.

    England winning - Cavendish winning

    A truly great day!

The win by Cav was genuinely amazing! he was so emotional and everyone who knew him was made up for him. Fantastic performance!
Just need Froome to show one day of good form too to reward his hard work and show he can get back too

Cav is my favourite sportsman by a mile. Nobody could get near him in his heyday and for him to turn back the years like he did today was amazing. I watched the six days of London towards the end of 2019 and he was still a missile on the track. Hope he wins on the Champs d'elysee more than I hope we win the Euros.

I had a tear in my eye when he won. I still remember watching an interview with him been absolutely devastated thinking his career was over towards the end of last year after a small one day race.

In a world full of bland, media trained British athletes all giving the same types of interviews he’s always been a breath of fresh air.

For anyone with any kind if interest in cycling today's events in the Tour were incredibly emotional. I deliberately did not check out the result of today's stage so that I could watch it after England Game.

I was very emotional due to the Enland win - as no doubt we all were. Watching Cavendish win brought me to tears What a man. Every pro cyclists dream is to win a stage in the Tour de France. Only an exceptional few manage one win. We can rightly be proud of someone who has now won 31.

Sorry! But as I watched it also on the highlights program I never thought I was breaking any news.

Do you have any idea what happened in the football?

I will hold my hands up and admit I thought he was a spent force at Tour level. Tonight, I am very, very pleased to be wrong about that. Hopefully, he can get the other 3(?) he needs to draw level at the top of the leaderboard of most stage wins ever.

Fabulous photo. For a sprint finish it was not even close. What an achievement!

Something that's always struck me as a bit odd...

I love watching pro-cycling, it's the one sport I watch as much as football (possibly even more than, as during 'working from home' I leave Eurosport on in the background), but it is generally quite marginal in this country and barely gets a mention in the media. Yet the response to this thread already suggests there are a lot more fans than I'd imagine. It's almost like it's some kind of underground sport no one wants to admit to liking.

(and yeah, Cav made me cry yesterday)

No worries, still got an enormous buzz from watching it for the first time, I couldn't be more pleased, I really thought he had had his last tour win years ago...to see how much it meant to him was awesome....

Good win by Cav but felt for Brent van Moer getting caught 200m from the line.
