A former university classmate of mine, who teaches some Austrian students, enquired, on my behalf, what the general view was of Markus Schopp. The comments he received suggested that that there was great disappointment that Schopp had left, as he was regarded as "der Baumeister des Erfolgs" (the architect of the success) of SV Hartberg. It was even mentioned that Schopp had been considered as coach by AC Milan last year. All the comments which my friend received were very positive. Despite the disappointment, however, the Austrians took great pride in the fact that Schopp had landed himself a job "auf der Insel" (on the island).
Sounds odd, doesn't it, but Britain is often referred to as "die Insel" by German and Austrian football commentators.
I suppose it's not so much different from 'on the continent', which is also a bit of a weird phrase when you think about it.
My mate who works in Dublin delights in telling his Irish work mates he’s “visiting the mainland” at the weekend when he’s coming home, doesn’t half wind em up!!
