Compared to the lyrics of the time like Duran Duran singing you’re about as easy as a nuclear war, young Paul was a genius; his songs are the sound track to my youth. No band touches The Jam for me.
The Jam did a passable cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move on Up" a 7 inch EP that came with their best off, "Snap". Brave, but they just about got away with it.
Used be mine but I listen more to the Style Council and Weller solo these days. His latest Fat Pop is ace. My favourite of the Jam’s is Man in the Corner Shop. Truly fantastic.
One of the highlights of a young me’s life was having a chat with Curtis when he performed Soul Deep with the Council Collective. I was in TSC fan club and got an invite to watch them record it. Started my life long worship of Curtis Soul Brother number 1
One I'd forgotten about - "Just who is the 5 o clock hero?' From this window I've seen the whole world pass From dawn to dusk I've heard the last laugh laughed I've seen enough tears to wash away this street I've heard wedding bells chime and a funeral march When as one life finishes another one starts
I always wondered why his wife was preparing to serve wine with a ruby. Surely has to be a cold beer.
Love dry white, but can't quite imagine washing a curry down with it. Wine buffs reckon if you're going to have wine with curry it should be Gewurtztraminer, but I usually find it far too floral.
Allus wondered what the words were at the start of the song. Before A distant echo. A child’s voice 1st then Paul I think.
Not read the rest of the thread, however, as later on said wine goes flat, it stands to reason you'd pop a cork from a bottle of sparkling wine?
Maybe it was one of those super cheap bottles of sparkling wine with a very tight fitting plastic cork?
But he’d have grown up with the Who’s version as with the Batman theme. Also covered ‘so sad about us’ as a tribute to Keith moon, and I believe he reprised it in his early solo career set.
I saw Paul Weller at royal Albert hall about ten years ago. I booked the night of his fiftieth birthday, thinking if ever jam reunion?? Half way through foxton came on with him and oasis drummer, apparently fall out with buckler is beyond mending. Did about five jam songs, including my fave, butterfly collector. He carried on the set after that with his new solo stuff but everybody was buzzing too much to care.
My biggest regret that I was too young to see The Jam even though I loved them, have seen TSC and Weller many times but my heart sings when he does Jam songs, they are a class apart. Some of those songs were so iconic and defined an era.
Saw The Jam twice, so much energy when Weller was still an "angry young man". All Mod Cons and Setting Sons contain some of the greatest songs ever written. Fantastic times.
