Been to similar as you (Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Rome and Amalfi), also worked with a few Italians and always found them lovely people with a good (unique) sense of humour. Just depends who you meet I guess
Dunno, I root for Scotland against everyone except England. Was genuinely disappointed when they didn't get through the group.
The Scottish antipathy towards the England team is hilariously one-sided and tinpot. They hate us with a passion, and we don't really think about them. For Scotland, the day that they played England in the euros group was their most important footballing day this century. For us it was another minor group game against poor opposition.
Ok. Right hypothetically Sheffield Wednesday v Carlisle fa cup final. I’d have no problems supporting Wednesday as Paul Sturrock United legend managed them and I’ve no connection with Carlisle. Wednesday also local to Barnsley and Yorkshire. Would you Merde also support your local rival to win the cup?
Not me with the problem Anyway it's immaterial, there are two givens in tournament football. 1) Scotland won't make it past the group stage. 2) England will f**k up...
100%, I'm sure the players no it's not a walkover, look how close Switzerland came to doing it twice.
As someone who follows England I can assure you the rivalry only exists on the day we play them. I wouldn’t have liked to lose the game but no more than a game against Ireland or Wales. It is just a local derby thing. I would say over the years the Germans and Argentinians are the teams we have felt more rivalry towards plus the odd spat with the Croatians.
When I lived in Germany, I never wanted them to win and the only time I watched Germany play was in Munich when England won. In Nepal, I went to almost every home international game they played and always rooted for them. Since being in Georgia, I have supported them against Ireland, Wales, Denmark and Spain. I am always going to support England though and I find as an expat/immigrant/emigre that support for England (and other nations) can be greater than it would be for some people at home. Been to a Warrington RLFC fan’s wedding today, he has never mentioned anything but RL at work, but is going to watch England tonight at 11.00pm on his wedding night! If anyone asks me whether it is club or country success that I want, my answer is always Barnsley. I would much rather have us be successful as a club side than England win a Euro or World Cup.
I take it you are going out with a sponge and a bucket of water cleaning windscreens at traffic lights then Ian......
