If we make face masks compulsory like seat belts I'd also like us to make hard hats compulsory while walking in built up areas just incase something falls from the sky.
Hard hats are compulsory in areas where objects *are likely to fall from the sky* - construction sites and other locations with a risk of head injury. PPE Regulations 1992. Whether the government relaxes the rules on requiring masks or not, employers have a duty of care to their employees. So in places like shops, buses, etc if an employer removes the requirements and an employee catches Covid at work and dies as a result, who is liable for that death? Transport workers were dis-proportionally affected by Covid (particularly bus, tube and train drivers) but continued to work during the height of the pandemic. Could we be facing a situation where unions are having to strike to protect their members?
I was taking the piss comparing wearing a face covering to a seatbelt is chaulk and cheese with seatbelts you can put a figure on how many lives they save each year and the about of time and money they save emergency services and the nhs. With facemasks the amount of lives they have directly saved is very debatable and weather they are fit for purpose is another. I wonder how many lives have been saved by walking into the pub with a mask on then taking it off at your seat. The point i was making was we could all wear had hats in day to day life and space suits or steel toe cap boots im sure in the population of 70million it would prevent a couple of deaths and injurys each year but there has to be a line drawn somewhere.
If surgical masks are as useless as some would have us believe, my doctor, dentist and the bloke that removed the cancerous lump from my arm a couple of years ago must be feeling right prats now, because they all wore them when they treated me.
doctors and nurses have sessions to get their masks custom fitted and teated to ensure they are airtight. if you are comparing a mask in a hospital setting to the ripped up y fronts that some folk seem to be wearing or even the disposable blue ones then you are mistaken. If you really think you should be wearing a mask the FFP2 ones are the masks you need. Scrafves, snoods, cotton, single use loose fittings ones offer miniscule protection to those around you unless you are coughing and barking and riddled with the rona - which lets face it you shouldnt be out of the house being like that.
Exactly when working on building sites wearing face masks you actually have one face fitted you don't just slap a piece of cloth on and away we go. Same with surgeons dentists etc although there ppe is also to protect from blood diseases and many other things.
Nope, they wore just the standard pale blue disposable that you see on the floor in the street these days. They obviously didn't know as much as you.
'as it is for transmitting colds and flu'. Now we all know that flu kills thousands of people in this country every year so may I ask have you always worn face masks on public transport? And have you previously said that all past governments were playing fast and lose with our health when they allowed people on public transport without a mask despite knowing that flu kills thousands and is an airborne virus?
Same here. I absolutely hate wearing them but (other than the one time I completely forgot) I've worn one in every single situation I should have because I'm not a complete selfish tw.a.t (I know that's probably a surprise) but as soon as I don't have to wear one then I won't. If I go to someone's house and they ask me to wear one then I will just like how I'd take my shoes off if they asked or do anything else within reason. It's just respectful isn't it. On the previous topic of people wearing masks outdoors I think there's three different types of people involved. One group who are just too lazy to take it off and put it back on. One who are actually wearing them properly and leaving them on until they've finished needing them fully so they aren't touching their mask and face constantly and one group who have been so utterly scared to death by the media that they're needlessly wearing them outdoors with nobody around because they're shítting themselves once they leave their home. The first group are lazy sods but doing no harm to anyone else. The second, fair play to them, they're doing what we all SHOULD do really. Again they're doing no harm to anyone else. The third group I feel so sorry for, the media coverage and constant talk of impending death has really taken its toll on some people's mental health and made them so paranoid that they're wearing a mask for absolutely no reason. I actually passed a lady in her 50s or 60s who was wearing a mask a good half an hour's walk from civilisation a few days ago. She can't possibly have been coming or going to anywhere that required one and I felt for her because she was clearly worried but again she and they are doing no harm to me or anyone else. The key thing is that regardless of the reason some people are choosing to wear a mask they're doing absolutely no harm to anyone else by doing so so why should I or anyone else care? Live and let live

You've forgot the fourth group... I was quite glad of my mask at the shop last week for a different reason. I had a really big spot on my cheek (I pretty much never, ever get spots, never did as a teenager either so felt self conscious about this one) and I was pleased that no-one could see it being angry under my mask I'd have definitely worn it out on walks just to hide the thing.
