Mary Always gets forgotten, always lumped in with William. But, she was the daughter of James II and took a stand against him, that cannot have been easy. Same goes for Anne, plus she was the end of the Stuart line, no kids see. During Anne's reign she went from being Queen of England, Scotland & Ireland to being Queen of Great Britain.
Agreed, and justice for her and her daughters. Only ruled a bit of the country though and wasn’t regarded by Tacitus at least as a queen, whereas Cartimandua (from Yorkshire but a “bit” self-serving) was? She has a fascinating story, amazing that it’s never been made into a decent film.
King Stephen. His reign was the most tumultuous I can think of. Fighting his own sister Matilda for control of the kingdom and having to denounce his heirs claims to the thrown.
Louis who later became Louis VIII of France. Invited over and became king between nut case John and Henry III. Turned up when needed, ruled for a bit then went back to France. How history could have been different if he'd remained king. No hundred years war? England and France remaining a single country? http://www.catherinehanley.co.uk/historical-background/king-louis-of-england/
Re Alfred the Great, his eldest son was Edward, who became king, and his daughter was a remarkable woman, known in her own time as the Lady of the Mercians. She helped win back some of the territories in the Danelaw. But it was his grandson, Athelstan, who can claim to be the first king of the area we now know as England. They were all cultured monarchs, certainly by the standards set by post Norman conquest Kings, who were generally far more interested in their French territories than England. I'm afraid much changed for the worse after 1066.
