I've done so at Oakwell on more than one occasion.

I have and its come close to dust up a couple of times. See my post on the sick comedian thread.Odd time at Barnsley, no problem as I've found people round me tend to be supportive, you have the moral high ground in doing so and I think everyone realises its a fast track way to get thrown out and probably banned so they'll back down in the ground. I'd certainly back you up redvesp, or anyone else who was doing the right thing. Suppose it gets a bit hard when there's two dozen of em.
I've actually felt a bit inspired by Ian Wright and how acted accepting one of our fan's apology. I'd certainly be pointing that out if I had to confront any future racism. "You are being a bad ambassador for our club and our town" "you might regret this at some point down the line" are two lines I'd be using, hope I dont have to though, West lower seems ok these days

Yes but it depends on the circumstances I wouldnt confront a group of skinheads with flags tattoed on their arms if I was on my own - but at a Oakwell if someone near me started hurling racist abut I definitely would - fortunately in the West Upper in recent times there has been no overt racism come to my ears

I've done it and got no support whatsoever from the people sitting around me.

We've all got to. Like others have said it's sometimes not smart to confront a big skinhead who's after a scrap, but we can rat them out to the stewards if it's at Oakwell/ staff if it's at a pub.

On casual rcism we've all got to tighten up now too and call out anyone we hear, even if there is no malicious intent there.

That depends entirely on the situation. To make out you’re part of the problem. Is not valid. If you would feel threatened, by what may be the outcome. Report it.

Doesn't make you part of the problem at all. There's nothing wrong in protecting your own skin. It's too blase to say if you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem. We all have to take context into account. If I was surrounded by 5 racists at a match I probably wouldn't say anything. If I was near an isolated racist I almost certainly would. We all make a positive contribution though simply by not laughing along, smiling, nodding our heads in fake agreement with racists. If all you can do is not give racists what they see as a compliant reaction then you have done a small but positive thing. Just dont be seen to go along with it. Don't give them a hint of an audience.

There are different thoughts on its origin but I always believed it was to do with Kaiser Bill and bad weather from the East. Just don't mention the war :)

I agree. It's a catch twentytwo though. How do you take away that hint of audience without offending the victims?

    to go slightly o/t

Would you challenge your employer to employ more people from under-represented groups in your work place?
Do you support 'ring-fencing' some jobs for under-represented groups ?

It's fine to 'take the knee' on the football pitch but look behind - what is the representation of 'Black Lives' in the Club - Staff/Directors etc. - if the balance is wrong should we challenge things?

Racism has many facets - we shouldn't pick and choose those facets that we feel comfortable challenging.

Hope it continues on here also that any form of racism or homophobia is not tolerated at all.

Would like to know the views of any. BAME members on here. For example. SD’s comment on the weather incident. Anyone who thought that offensive. (I’d be surprised if anyone actually did.) is looking for offence when none there. And if one of our BAME members does see offence in it. could you please explain why. I thought the response to him would have been more of an issue. Putting thoughts into peoples heads that weren’t there.

What happens next? We've done talking. Arrest and prison terms or sent on awareness courses for being racist? Being made to wear a racist sash? Loss of livelihood?

The players are right. I think it was Les Ferdinand who mentioned it but it was backed up by others until there is a deterrent nothing will change.

Perfectly happy calling it out say at Oakwell for instance. Saying that I can't say I have picked up on anything. Can't normally hear anyone apart from the bloke behind slating the team from the kick off..

As for ring fencing jobs, I just don't buy into it I'm afraid. For me it has to be best person for the job and nothing else, otherwise you end up isolating other people.
Good practices like removing all personal information when looking at CV's for interview are useful tools. From my experience of interviewing people, it's not difficult to keep the process fair.
Introducing any bias in my opinion is not positive.

I was at the taxi rank in town after the England game on Sunday. At the front of the queue were a gang of "travellers" I hope I haven't offended anyone with that term. There was about 8/9 of them all drunk with drinks glasses still in hand.It was throwing it down with rain and people just wanted to get home.First cab pulls up all the gang piled into it including the boot, obviously the driver wouldn't take them.Next cab pulls up the same happens again.By this time other cabs were just driving pass the rank and getting drinks and glasses thrown at there taxis. One brave soul said " come on lads just get into 2 cabs and we can all go home" the reply was "F off or I'll kill you" In the end me and my wife walked away and flagged a taxi down near the Civic Hall.We told the driver and asked him to report the incidents what were going off,no point he says we've no one to report it to.Why don't you phone the police then,no point he says they'll not come out.Anyway I'll drop you off and I'm going home.We drove past the rank same travellers still at the front of the queue causing mayhem nobody could go home,no body to report it to and people getting wet through.About 60/70 people in the rank waiting, what do you do take them on and risk getting glassed,I honestly don't know and I hope I'm not in this situation.
I hope this post is classed as been in the appropriate thread.

Me too because it's sad that it's come to it but some people do need a list of definitive do's and don'ts. A bit off topic yesterday there was a thread about Rashford being criticised by a Tory M.P and asked to stick to football as if he had he wouldn't have missed. I missed that it was about the school meals and it had to be pointed out to me afterwards. I see it was a moral revenge jab now. However, at the time I saw it as people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Not a glowing view I know. I've accepted that now.
