Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire in. No Stones! Stopped looking any further after that.

Bizarre choices in here. Sterling was rightly included though.

Surprised at Maguire to be honest. Stones has no chance when our own commentators and pundits are only too ready to pounce on him. Alan Shearer never mentioned the early error by Maguire where he gifted Italy a corner. Stones has a good game brings the ball out never wastes the ball all game, yet is pounced upon by Shearer for being the ‘wrong side’ of an Italian player in the skirmish that led to their goal. I know I’m biased but there has to be some balance in that they call out all Maguire’s and other players mistake, and when Stones makes a charging run forward or picks out a good pass, give him the same praise as Maguire.

Yeah this is an odd one.

Maguire over stones despite missing first couple of games? Odd.

For me walker was quite inconsistent over the tournament - though his best couple of games were the semi and the final so can just a put understand this

I know everyone has raved about spinazzola but shaw was in a team that conceded fewer and got 3 assists and a goal in the final from left back, and played every game ... Difficult to see how that could be bettered.

Not sure i'd call it being pounced on. The pundits will analyse the goals, and both Stones and Mount should've done better at defending that corner. It was Shearer's job to discuss it

Think you can make a case for all the players in that team. That's not to say it would be my selection.

So why didn’t he call out out the rest of the debacle defending in that whole scenario.

He would be in if it wasn't for the Italian keeper who won player of the tournament

Nailed on the defensive centre half pairing would be split between IT and ENG. Maguire had a good game. No better or worse than Stones for me. I think if Pickford had a clean sheet in final and we won he would have got in. How many games did Spinazzola play? That surprises me.

Spinazolla played in 4 tournament games of which 1 was when he went off injured.

Shaw played in 6 of the 7 England games.

You're probably right based on the formation chosen. I don't know how an ever present like Stones misses out to Maguire but there you go. Stones doesn't drink the vodka or the jager I guess.

Schick played better than Lukaku overall I would argue.

They probably picked Maguire over Stones due to his penalty. I'm not saying that's the right decision, but I reckon it's why he's in there.

Best penalty of the tournament as well. That camera view of in the corner of the goal is just incredible.

I picked my team of the tournament on the BBC sport website and picked 7 of those.

Naturally I picked Stones over Maguire.

Thought maguire is rightly in there and had a great tournament. Minus did good when called upon but maguire was class and makes the players around him play better. Shaw should be in there imo, the only reason pickford misses out is because the Italian keeper is player of the tournament.

Thought Walker was a headless chicken most times ! His saving grace was his recovery runs with pace and the overlap that allowed Trippier the cross for the goal against Italy,

Patrik Schick should have been in there for finishing joint top scorer of the tournament with the GOAT. He played for the only bottom ranked country in any of the eight groups that reached the knock out stage. They lost by one goal to the beaten finalists and Denmark. Good draw against a strong Croatia side and comfortably beat Holland.
