I know little about golf, but I like a dabble on the Open utilising the expertise of those who know better than I do. I've picked out a small squadron of players for whom I've obtained combined odds of 2.375/1 (suggesting a 29.6% chance of one of them winning) in the hope that their actual chances as a group might be in excess of 30%. Anyway, it seems to me that Rahm and Koepka have to be included in calculations. I also think Thomas often appears to be on the scene, and Lowry (defending champion) and Hatton look like competitors with good links form. My longshot is Branden Grace (well, not that long!). Any views folks?
Golf is so hard to bet on, unless it's the Masters as it's the same course every year and you've got the top players each year. Each way bets.... Fitzpatrick, Min Woo Lee, Westwood, Poulter, Rahm, Thomas, Koepka, Bland, Harrington. To win: obvious choices are Rahm, Thomas, Koepka. But we've seen fairly random winners on occasion and this could be another...
The rain of the last couple of weeks and the fact they like to keep the course as natural as possible, means anyone not hitting the fairway is in for a rough ride. Think this might favour the non-PGA your regulars and rule out some of the Americans, although you can never fully rule them out. Justin Rose at 66/1 seems massively long so maybe I’ve missed something there. Hovland could be a good shout.
Don't think Rose has won a ranking tournament event for a few years now, he's shown some form in the Masters and PGA championship though to make him an each way possibility at those odds. They see, to make the Open more and more US friendly as the years go by with longer driving and wider fairways.
He always seems to, in my mind at least but I could be wrong, performs well at the Open and really suits a Links course. It was his form at the Masters that made me think 66/1 was long odds. Suppose it makes sense he's slightly longer than Westwood given how he's performed on the leaderboard over the last 12 months. Was listening to them talk about the course earlier in the week and here they particularly like to have nature just do it's thing so the rough that almost plays like a fairway could easily end up being heavy going. They haven't cut it back too much by all accounts. Anyone who is comfortable consistently finding the fairway normally does well at the Open.
Wow - I dont bet on sport but if I did that looks really tempting - I dont know what you missed either as he has top 10 finishes in both majors he has played this year - they seem really decent odds Ive no idea who will win but it could be a home grown player McIlroy or Casey might be good shouts
I’ve gone Fitzpatrick as he is in form ,played well at the Scottish , Higgo again in form and a future star knows his way round a links course , McIntyre brought up on links golf , and a sentimental punt on Richard Bland playing the golf of his life …..all e/w 11places on Sky bet . Zalatoris might be an outside bet , obviously big boys Rahm , Rory , Koepka always in it although Koepka said it wasn’t his favourite course to play yesterday
Gone and had a look at a few stats and the course and I'd certainly add Morikawa, not only because he's playing well but the course should suit him hitting fairways and greens. Also there's only 2 par 5's meaning those who score big on those holes aren't going to have that advantage.
I think Fitzpatrick benefitted massively from playing with me last Wednesday. Lovely lad and it turns out he was born in Barnsley.
Jon Rahm could win at a canter and a safe e/w bet. I've had a few quid on Matty Fitzpatrick he's not scared of winning and playing well.
I've noticed some of your posts regarding golf Archerfield, obviously your a bit of a player. Who the hell are you, and where do you play ?
You can tell how bad the rough will be just by Dechambeau saying he might have to hit irons off the tee instead of just bashing it everywhere and anywhere. Really hard to call the tournament. I think I’ll be boring and keep my money to myself this year.
I play my golf at Archerfield. I’ve lived here since 2008. Originally learnt the game at Barnsley GC and represented the club along with Shaun who is still there as club pro. I’ve been fortunate enough to win a televised tournament on Sky TV. Not as good as I used to be but still love playing.
We would sneak on staincross when we thought everyone had gone home. Mike Melling used to chase us off . He wasn't as quick as us in them days .
Westwood is in his best form for a long while and Poulter isn’t too bad either. EW bets for first 12 ( PPower ) seem realistic for both but realistically, Speith should win
