Yorkshire ( home tie) v Sussex in the T20 quarter finals. Playing it at the Emirates, Chester le st. The home of Durham ccc.
Yorkshire will have made the decision. Having just had a look at the fixtures for Headingly. (Should have realised) 24th August is the quarter final Yorks v Sussex at The emerates. 25th -29th August England v India test at Headingly, Ah well. Trip to Chester le st. If I can make it. Nice day out. Unless we are (Barnsley fc) in round 2 of the league cup that day. (W/c 23rd)
I could have sworn we had a cracking ground at Scarborough or has the pursuit of the dollar rendered that unacceptable?
Ground Capacity I reckon. 17k (surprised at that) v 11.5k. Guess home advantage re playing conditions etc. Are out of the window with any other choice. Other than Headingly.
Yep, like I said. Pursuit of the dollar. I guess if more than 11.5k Yorkshire fans want to see it and want to travel to Durham there's an argument for doing it. Personally I wouldn't walk to the bottom of the road to watch T20.
Fair enough. But I believe county cricket Is poorly attended and on it’s way out. ( my preference is 50 over games. ) There’s no money in it. Test cricket will still be popular. So it may well survive. I’ve watched a lot of Vitality blast and international T20 this year. And some of the stuff lately has been outstanding to watch. In the women’s game as well. Not so sure about this 100 ball stuff. I feel we need more of a connection and attachment rather than Northern Diamonds. I feel, it’ll feel like exhibition stuff.
I'm a traditionalist. Cricket is cricket not some sloggit fest. County Championship cricket may well die out but I'm certainly not going to switch to T20. It's the same with golf, they keep coming up with ideas to make it more marketable. I don't care if less people watch or play, it's their choice but don't bastardise the game to attract people who don't really like the product. If the result is the loss of a few courses and the reduction in what the pros earn on the tour fair enough. Sport has made a rod for it's own back where money is god and a reduction in revenues is catastrophic. It's not. Invariably the money chanels out to the players in any sport. I don't care if Rory McIroy, Roger Federer, Lionel Messi etc have to settle for fifty quid a week, just leave the game alone for those of us who actually enjoy it. Sorry for the rant which isn't aimed at you.
Twenty overs cricket has been played as a viable contest for years before I (and probably you ) were born. I`m sure many remember the Friday Night Open Knockout at Shaw Lane and the Thornes Cup at Chapeltown where the best league cricketers and many county players "guested" for the top local teams. (Very often they played 15 eight-ball overs to save time on changing ends). These were serious cricket games worth prestige and money to those concerned and dispels the myth that T20 is a modern phenomenon.
late 80`s early 90`s we used to dominate one of the top evening leagues in this area mexboro evening league 15*8 ball overs and one guest. so its been around a while. used to break me neck to get there on time only to find out there was only 5 of you there at 6 bells so had to field first great days. played in thorne cup mid to late 90`s some serious players there think you could have 4 /5 guests usually local lads made good plying there trade in the bradford/ huddersfield leagues and they always brought a mate who was **** hot.
forgot these as well Teal trophy played at Darton every thursday night Rose bowl at Shaw Lane on fridays and there was a Yorkshire council one called the Beumont cup as well, mainly west yorks sides one at Donny towns ground whites used to be knackered come satdi
I used to go down every Friday night to Shaw Lane with my Dad. Can't remember if they were 20 overs or not. If pressed I'd have guessed at 30 or so but I take your point. There was no alternative to short games in the evenings. I go to T20 games now at Kerry. I really don't like them but it was all they were allowed to play last season. Back to 50 over games as of last weekend thankfully which are much preferable where the bowlers have the opportunity to get into a rhythm, the batsmen can build an innings rather than taking risks from ball one. We've got players at Kerry who can bat properly and look good but are out cheaply most games trying to force the pace. It's a lottery. At English County level though I find limited overs stuff meaningless really. Horses for courses I guess.
Unless it’s altered recently, Sky won’t broadcast any games from Scarborough cos they can’t get their required equipment through the entrance on Marine Road.
That's really interesting - as somebody who came late to cricket (I was 20 or so, and was never really exposed to it as a child) I never knew about this. I'm not sure it's going to make me see the Hundred in a different light (go Birmingham Phoenix!), but seeing as the weird overs thing is probably my biggest problem with it you never know... After being a bit snobbish about the shorter forms I think I've got to the point now where I enjoy and appreciate all current forms. But surely T20 is fast enough for anybody!
never been to a county or test match, but a few 50 or t20, the t20s are just a good afternoon or evenings entertainment with friends a few beers and generally a decent laugh, was a trent bridge the same day of the stokes/leach ashes triumph at headingley, most were glued to their mobiles checking in on test match score already booked 2 games for the 100'd with a night out in leeds for 1 of them, nice if weather ok and make day of it
