Found myself a live game of footy to watch, tootled over to Fev to see what this new Wakefield team is all about. Impressive number of Donni fans here given they must be playing their academy and trialists.
You've just reminded me, I was going to pop up to watch Hallam FC tonight against Chesterfield U23s. 15 minute walk from mine. Completely forgot all about it.
Lots of confusion about having relationships with your siblings around here as well! The ball is definitely round, Donni just taken one goal lead although believe it or not Wakefield have had the best chances and should have scored themselves!
Just got back from this. Decent game and a good crowd of 607, but lost count at 6/7 nil to Donny. Wakefield have done well to get Adam Lockwood in the dugout at that level.
Put your money on Wakey to get promoted and Donny to get relegated. I thought Donny were very underwhelming
Played a lot of kids though didn't they? Personally thought, considering it was a mixed XI, they controlled the game after an impressive first 20 minutes for Wakefield. Wakefield were so poor in their very first game last year but last night they looked a tidy little outfit (for their level). That winger will score or be involved in 40+ goals next season!
Wakey got a 10 year plan to make it football league. They playing at a ground now that would be suitable but not sure about the hill. Do many foot ground have a hill like we have at Fev
https://thebigkickoff.com/2021/05/12/wakefield-afc-the-new-sleeping-giant-of-yorkshire-football/ https://firsttimefinish.co.uk/2021/06/21/wakefield-afc-a-club-on-the-rise-looking-to-transform-city/ It's a shame such a big place is so low down the Football pyramid (same with York) so good luck to them.
No completely different. Only set up in the last 18 months by Chris Turner and a consortium (ex Wednesday Keeper I think?). Starting at the bottom but based on last night I think they could rise quickly over the next three years. Securing Adam Lockwood at that left is a big coup - although that doesn't mean he's actually any good!
Ah ok, but there was a connect at some point wasn’t there - maybe a proposed amalgamation between Emley and a previous Wakefield setup?
Exactly this. They became Wakefield and Emley for a while. Might have even played some games at Belle Vue?
Yeah, the team under Glavin moved to Wakefield, still called Emley, played at Bell Vue, had a decent Lebonese striker as I recall watching them a few times - but I think it alienated all their fans on the Huddersfield side of this patch of W.Yorks and it all seemed a bit half *rsed at becoming the official team of Wakefield. This seems very different however, long term I'm not sure you can stay in Featherstone - you are fighting the Rugby League culture plus I'm not sure the locals will get behind "wakefield" - I think they have to eventually move to the city itself just to get your Football fans who support Leeds/Barnsley/Hudderfield - of which there are enough to get a healthy crowd IMHO.
I think they have plans to move to Wakefield probably share with Trinity but that ground is awful. Even if they replace the main stand it’s still not great. Still in wakey it would be hard to establish a fan base. Folk in wakey used to not having a team already follow someone else
They currently play at step 7 (or what used to be step 7) is now a regional feeder league. They applied for promotion to NCEL but were not successful. There was a lot of controversy around there direct placement into the county senior league Premier in their first year, after teams had been trying for years to gain promotion to that division. Money talks I guess. They had a reserves in the central midlands division 1 North as well a year ago, played at the Dorothy Hyman (still do) as did the first team, but they were poor. Seem to get a lot of ex scholars and some foreign pros including having an international goalkeeper, who was crap.
